Pocket Guide: Kowloon

As a holiday destination, Hong Kong is truly unique. Juggling the traditional and the modern, and a mix of Chinese and British influence, this vibrant, cosmopolitan city almost defies definition. It’s also a hugely important travel and business hub, and as a result, boasts a vast number of hotels and apartments, with many situated in the mainland region of Kowloon.

Read on to find out more about your accommodation options for Kowloon and Hong Kong.

Kowloon Districts: Where to Stay

When most people think of Hong Kong, they think of the island. Head across the water to Kowloon, by travelling from the island on the famous Star Ferry or the metro system, and you can enjoy a different, arguably more authentic side of Hong Kong.

One of the most popular districts in this densely populated region is Tsim Sha Tsui, which encompasses the ferry ports and is renowned for its tourist-friendly attractions and shops, and budget hotels and hostels. If you’re keen to explore Hong Kong’s best markets, though, accommodation in Mong Kok or Yau Ma Tei may suit you the most.</>

Generally speaking, the southernmost districts of Kowloon are the most popular with tourists – if not solely for their proximity to the island. Naturally, you'll find a high concentration of hotels here.

Business Hotels in Kowloon

The financial centre of Hong Kong may be located on the island, but many people find it more convenient to stay in Kowloon. Book accommodation here and you have at your disposal an affordable four or five star hotel with excellent transport links to the island’s Central district (i.e. the business hub). Many of Kowloon’s business hotels are found in Tsim Sha Tsui and are close to the city’s major conference centres.

Best of all? If you have work commitments on the island, you can shrug off the day and escape to Kowloon for your evening entertainment.

Getting around Kowloon

The beauty of booking a place to stay in Kowloon is that the public transport links make it incredibly plain sailing to get around. Stay at a hotel within walking distance of the Star Ferry and you can get to the islands of Hong Kong, Lantau and Lamma quickly and cheaply. However, even if you don’t stay in a hotel or hostel near the pier, you’ll be able to take advantage of the city’s MTR (Mass Transit Railway), which runs through large areas of Hong Kong, connecting Kowloon to Hong Kong Island and Lantau.

Attractions in Kowloon and Hong Kong

Kowloon’s cultural and historic highlights are numerous. Among them are the Hong Kong Space Museum, the Flower Market, and the Avenue of Stars, a Hong Kong take on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Other attractions that are easy to reach from Kowloon include Victoria Peak, the island’s highest point; Stanley, a tourist town with good shopping and a nice sea view; and Lantau’s Big Buddha – which sits close to the Po Lin Monastery and is accessed by cable car (or by public bus if you’re looking to save money).
