Pocket Guide: Indian Wells

Tucked away in the shadow of the Eisenhower Mountain, 17 miles southeast of Palm Springs, Indian Wells is a small desert town famous for the annual world-class tennis tournament, the BNP Paribas.

Thanks to its year-round warm climate, Indian Wells is a popular place to stay for the tennis, golf and outdoors set, who come for the many desert and canyon hiking trails.

Sandwiched between Palm Desert and La Quinta in the Greater Palm Springs area, Indian Wells was originally an old Native Indian settlement. The village grew up around a hand-dug well, which became the Coachella Valley's main watering point for over 40 years.

The golden era began in 1957 when the first of several large golf resorts, one owned by Lucille Ball, was built. It's now considered one of the country's top golfing destinations.

Golf Resorts in Indian Wells

Indian Wells has a reputation for luxurious four- and five-star resorts and hotels. A popular winter getaway, it has several desert resorts with top-class golf courses, deluxe day spas and fine-dining restaurants, all with scenic mountain views.

For a more affordable stay, head west along the Highway 111 where you'll find several comfortable two- and three-star roadside inns and popular chain hotels, most with swimming pools and restaurants.

Indian Wells Highlights

You might make your way to Indian Wells for the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, the second largest tennis facility in the world. Built in 2000, it has 29 tennis courts and two stadiums seating up to 24,000 spectators. It's also home to the world-class Japanese restaurant, Nobu, and hosts a calendar of concerts throughout the year.

In Palm Desert, two miles east, is the popular Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, a family-friendly desert nature park where you can meet mountain lions, gazelles and giraffes. Or spend a morning at Sunnylands, the Mid-Century estate of socialites Walter and Leonore Annenberg in the neighbouring town of Rancho Mirage.

After a day at the tennis or playing golf, head back to your Indian Wells hotel or resort for a relaxing drink on the terrace, before exploring the town's top-notch restaurants on Highway 111.
