Fair warning: after a few days here, ordinary vacation rentals are going to feel like a letdown.
This is not an ordinary vacation rental.
A 23-foot vaulted great room with a stone wood-burning fireplace. Original fine art on the walls. Period antiques that actually belong. A wormy Chestnut kitchen island. A library stocked with books and games. A wraparound covered porch with two dining tables, a wood-burning stone fireplace, a porch swing, and a private hot tub under the open sky. Mirror Lake a short stroll down the road, where the Canadian Geese and Mallards have long since decided this neighborhood belongs to them.
This is the kind of lodge that makes you wonder why you ever stayed anywhere else — and start planning the return trip before you've unpacked.
A Great Room That Commands Attention The moment you step inside, the architecture makes its case. Twenty-three feet of vaulted ceiling overhead, gleaming hardwood floors underfoot, a massive stone wood-burning fireplace filling the wall in front of you. The great room here isn't a feature — it's a statement about what this entire property values: space, warmth, and the kind of refined comfort that doesn't require explaining. Fine original art and carefully chosen antiques give the room a soul that no amount of interior design budget alone can manufacture. It simply took time and taste to get here.
The fully equipped kitchen anchors one end of the main level with the same quiet confidence — a wormy Chestnut island that's as beautiful as it is functional, and a layout that makes cooking for a crowd feel less like a production and more like part of the evening.
Two King Suites. Neither One a Compromise. The main-level king primary suite offers a walk-in closet, a walk-in shower, and a jetted soaking tub — the kind of bathroom that changes how you feel about mornings. Upstairs, the second king primary suite matches it stride for stride with its own walk-in closet, walk-in shower, and a soaking tub built for two. A third bedroom with a queen bed completes the upper level for additional guests. Three bedrooms, three distinct experiences, and enough bathroom luxury distributed across the house that no one feels like they drew the short straw.
The Library, the Porch Swing, the Hot Tub The handsome library — stocked with books, games, and the kind of atmosphere that makes an afternoon disappear — is the room that surprises people. It's easy to walk past and then find yourself still there two hours later. But the wraparound covered porch is where this property truly distinguishes itself. A porch swing at the front for slow mornings. Two dining tables and new patio furniture for meals that stretch long into the evening. A wood-burning stone fireplace for when the mountain air turns cool. And a private hot tub positioned for maximum star visibility — because a soak under a clear Highlands sky is the kind of experience that doesn't translate in photos but stays with you for years.
Just off the kitchen, a screened-in porch adds another layer of outdoor living — comfortable seating, tranquil views, and a seamless connection back to the wraparound porch so the whole outdoor circuit flows without interruption.
Mirror Lake, Minutes Away Stroll down to Mirror Lake and let the morning find its own pace. The resident Canadian Geese and Mallards are reliably charming, the landscape surrounding the lake is quietly stunning, and the walk back to the lodge — knowing what's waiting on that porch — is one of the better short walks you'll take all trip.
Downtown Highlands is minutes away. The restaurants, the shops, the waterfalls, the trails — all within easy reach. But between the library, the porch, the two fireplaces, and that hot tub, you may find the outside world requires less attention than you expected.
Come for the mountains. Stay for the lodge. Leave already negotiating dates for next year.

Great location to Highland restaurants, hiking etc. House was well stocked with essentials, the hot tub was clean and we also enjoyed the wood burning fireplace outside. Overall a great rental!
My husband & I enjoyed a great stay at Laughing Bear Lodge. The yard was perfect for the dogs & such a convenient location to town. Would recommend & stay again. We were welcomed with a surprise gift, much appreciated! Although we stayed on the main level there was lots of extra room.
this was a great place for my brother, our wives and our dog. Large, clean, secluded, with plenty of room outdoors for our dog. Also very near multiple hiking areas with waterfalls and scenic views, and many choices of good restaurants. Thank you for having us!
This lovely house in a terrific location was perfect for the six of us, who had not visited in a long time. The rooms/bathrooms were comfortable and clean, the kitchen worked great for our cocktails/snacks, the living room was the perfect spot for early morning coffee and chats. The porch with lovely fireplace made for a great after dinner place to cozy up with blankets for more catch up conversations. Truly a perfect place for us all to gather as we enjoyed Highlands!
This place was amazing. We went up early on a Saturday and got right in. The hot tub was amazing and we had smores by the fire. We were able to bring our dogs which made it even more enjoyable. They loved playing in the yard. There is so much property for them to roam. We are planning on staying there next Memorial Day.
We loved the house and location for a vacation with our adult children. The house is well appointed and lives up to the listing. The only issue we had was the doors not locking upstairs, but we didn’t have any kids so it wasn’t a big deal. Communication with rental company was great. They were very helpful.
The house had everything we needed and it was very clean. The negative was we planned to use outside fireplace as we bought firewood, but the porch was filthy & furniture covered in dirty sheets.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious, as well as the closets. The house was very clean and well stocked with pots, pans, and utensils. We loved the porch; though it was too chilly to use it as much as we would have liked. We will just have to visit again during a warmer time of year. Would definitely recommend this home!!
We had a wonderful time at this house. The house is on a quiet, beautiful street. We spent most of our days on the porch enjoying the beautiful weather. Beds were very comfortable. We would definitely stay here again!
We enjoyed our stay as a family for the Christmas holidays.
I would suggest that the property would replace the kitchen exhaust and light over the stove. Any families cooking a lot of the meals in the home.

Great house and location with older feel
Hot tub is great. Location is great. House is spacious. Beds comfortable. Decoration items are a bit creepy for my taste - and you can’t really see them on the pictures. Cleanliness should be improved, some spider webs in places and dishes not so clean. Feels like a few spots were missed when cleaning was done. To check-in/out, you have to go pick up the keys at office and bring back after. Not terrible but nowadays there are easier ways to check-in. Overall, house is fine for a few days.
Because VRBO kept rejecting my mild review I now label this rental bad.
Wifi is terrible and can be cured with $169 EERO or similar mesh system
Speaker on main TV is terrible and can be corrected with a cheap external speaker
We were not able to stay at this property - the hot tub and the heating were broken

Fall vacation
They advertised that the hot tub does not work sometimes therefore I emailed the manager to confirm that it does currently work and they never responded. Got there and it was apparent it hadn’t worked in some time. Heat didn’t work downstairs and the temp inside was 56 degrees. Manager did bring us some space heaters which helped. Cobwebs seen all over the house. A tree had fallen on the roof and was left there Great location and could be an awesome property if it were maintained better
Were there for a family wedding great space inside and out. Enjoyed the outside fireplace.
Great place to stay quiet and relaxing

Black mold smell throughout the whole house!!!
This property has potential. But looks very neglected outside and there is clearly a leak from the upstairs bathroom into the master bedroom closet where black mold was 2‘ x 1‘ staining the ceiling and the whole house is horribly musty. Master bedroom linens are 30+ years old and the bedspread I would not want to touch. Pillows are horrible. There is an extreme problem with the Bears the trash barrels that are not secured tied down. Did not appreciate the management making that our problem. Deck furniture is extremely old cushions need to be thrown out. Spiderwebs on the inside of the windows blinds and the whole outside of the house is pressure washing. Front steps are extremely dangerous and very very slippery when it was raining due to moss growing on them as well as The stone walkway going from the driveway to the front door. I would be very hesitant to ever use VRBO again.
Property was good except for the bed in downstairs bedroom. Very uncomfortable and difficult to move around in. Bed was low to floor and very soft mattress

Limited or no needed items which I normally find even in a motel.
Had to purchase the following items that are normally furnished in a rental facility: coffee filters, plastic trash bags, dishwasher soap, toilet paper--none in the house, waste baskets for some bathrooms, Kleenex, plus no Netflix’s in master bedroom.
The 4 of us all in our 50’s had a wonderful time. Luckily the Hot Tub was worked on almost immediately and we were thrilled! It rained hard one night and got chilly so we had the outdoor fireplace raging, had wonderful appetizers and drinks outside and then got in the hot tub! The owners or there employees kept in touch through texting which worked out great. We will be back!
