Heelsum once made a name for itself with its paper industry. It tried its hand at tobacco for a while, before going back to paper. You’ll see this history in the 1900’s mansions around town and a high-end paper factory. Heelsum is an ideal destination for a peaceful getaway in the Netherlands. Admire the estates throughout town, hit a hole-in-one on what may be the most beautiful golf course in the Netherlands, and most importantly: enjoy yourself and relax!

During winter, it is possible to go ice skating at the castle. For local art, visit Museum Veulwezoom. If you’re not afraid of heights, it is recommended to visit look-out tower De Boersberg. Go for a long walk or a bike ride (any time of year!), visit the picturesque villages throughout the forests for lunch or ice cream, or choose a more adventurous activity, such as mountain biking, trail running, or horseback riding. Also characteristic to Gelderland, the province, are the cherries. Make sure to go cherry picking if it’s the season, or at least get some fresh cherries right from the orchards.
The city closest to Heelsum if Arnhem: a bustling city with tons of shops and restaurants, and attractions such as Burger’s Zoo and Dutch Open-Air Museum. Nijmegen -said to be the oldest city in the Netherlands- and Utrecht -one of the student cities- are also nearby. Other attractions in the area include the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek, the Kröller-Müller Museum and several indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a lake at Strandpark Slijk-Ewijk.
