Opening its doors in 1973, the Haymarket Shopping Centre is the oldest shopping mall in the country, and now has dozens of fantastic shops, including a number of high-end department stores. The centre even has its own bus station, which provides regular services to the rest of Leicester and the city's excellent hotels and bed and breakfast establishments.
From the latest gadgets and gizmos, to premium footwear, fashion items, children's toys, supermarkets, exquisite jewellery, and travel agents, the Haymarket Shopping Centre has everything you need right on your hotel doorstep. The centre also has hundreds of parking spaces, and various restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy delicious meals and snacks before or after a big shop.
Just a short stroll to the east of the retail complex is Leicester Cathedral, which dates back to Norman times and is dominated by a prominent 67-metre spire. It was here where, in 2015, archaeologists from the University of Leicester made a remarkable discovery when they found the stone coffin of Richard III, who served as the King of England from 1483 until 1485.
Leicester is also home to picturesque Abbey Park, a popular picnicking spot, and a number of acclaimed museums such as the Jewry Wall Museum, the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, and the Abbey Pumping Station exhibition.
If you’re looking for a little luxury you could stay at the Mercure Leicester The Grand Hotel, an acclaimed four star venue that has conference rooms and 24-hour room service, and is in an enchanting historic building. Another luxury hotel in the Marriott Hotel, which also offers chic accommodation, deluxe amenities, and easy access to the motorway network via the M1 and M69.
