Fyne Court, in Somerset's magnificently scenic Quantock Hills, is something of a hidden gem in the Wessex landscape, slightly off the beaten tourist track but certainly well worth a visit. There are numerous accommodation options in the surrounding area and you'll easily be able to find a suitable Somerset hotel or guesthouse to stay at. If you're based in one of the county's two cities, Wells and Bath, or in a town like Taunton, use the excellent roads to get there.
Long before Fyne Court was taken over by the National Trust it was occupied for several generations by the Crosse Family, until in 1894 a fire swept through and completely demolished it. The grounds remained of course, and you can enjoy these on a trip from your Somerset hotel and also see the site where the old house originally stood. If you come in July or August you can take advantage of a free guided tour. The most famous of Fyne Court's residents was the eccentric Andrew Crosse, who was an amateur scientist and nicknamed by the locals the 'Thunder and Lightning Man'. In the great tradition of gentleman scientists of the early-19th Century, Crosse was something of a real life Frankenstein who obsessively experimented with electricity in his Fyne Court laboratory, his batteries in particular making a lot of noise!
Kids love a visit to Fyne Park because of the organised activities on offer. They include den-building, tree-climbing and games in the old courtyard of the house. There's a play trail and a recently installed sky glade on the estate, from where you can do some serious cloud spotting. For more sedentary visitors, Fyne Court has a pleasant Courtyard Café, which serves a range of home-made cakes and of course the famous Somerset cream teas.
Whether you're based locally at a Somerset hotel or are just passing through the Quantocks, be sure to stop off at Fyne Court for an enjoyable afternoon's break. It's a peaceful and scenic spot, with attractions and activities for all ages.
