Set in a beautiful, expansive lawn, on a shoreline road, just ten minutes from town. Arriving at this grand mansion, with its lovely pond and willow and stately columns felt like walking in to a different, more gentle time. We feel so grateful to have been able to stay in this amazing home, filled with beauty and treasures of art. And our hosts, John and Steve, were fabulous. John greeted us on our late arrival with a glass of wine and a warm chat in their fantastic kitchen. Steve welcomed us in the morning with coffee and a delicious breakfast in the dining room. His frittata is perfection! We enjoyed our upstairs bedroom very much. A high comfortable bed with fine linens, a sitting area that felt like a grand home, the views out the windows of magnificent trees, colorful hens and the long original road that leads to the front of this grand plantation. In the evening, by the fire, with a cocktail, John told the story of their ghost, Elizabeth. She is shy, I think, and did not appear for us during our stay. Their little yorkies aren't shy though. Affectionate and lively, they add a zestful spirit of a happy home. They do yap a lot! But for us this was a treat, something new, and it is joyful yapping and occasional! The area affords much solitude, though, with porches, patio, lawns and seating for any mood. We like Edenton very much, but if we return again; it will be to visit Athol Plantation and dear owners, John and Steve.
