Pocket Guide: Curacao

Forming the C in the Caribbean’s ABC islands (along with Aruba and Bonaire) this little gem lies just off the coast of Venezuela, as an independent part of the Netherlands. Discover UNESCO-listed towns and plenty of secluded coves where you can learn to scuba dive or snorkel in the clear waters. Unlike some other Caribbean Islands, Curacao is not 100% reliant on tourism, which means there’s a more authentic atmosphere and less of the over-development you can find on other islands. It also creates a healthy buzz which is teamed with an innate ability to relax and enjoy life. Still, it does have some great hotels.

Areas & Neighbourhoods: Where to Stay in Curacao

Willemstad - The capital city and main population hub, this colourful harbour town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but still has some great, modern hotels. You can also visit the America’s oldest surviving synagogue.

Westpunt - The name for the western-most point of the island and a small town nearby, drink in the beautiful views or fish with locals.

Sint Michiel - A small fishing village found at the south end of Bullenbaai Bay. It’s only a few miles from the capital at Willemstad on the west coast.

Otrobanda - The most historic part of Willemstad which contains many of the more than 800 UNESCO registered architectural monuments.

Christoffel National Park - This nature reserve is where you can visit the Boca Grandi Indian Caves, where there are mysterious paintings left by the Arawak Indians, the island’s original inhabitants.

Things to See with a Hotel in Curacao

The capital Willemstad is located on a beautiful natural harbour, made even more impressive by the array of colourful buildings and unique architecture. Wander the streets of the town and enjoy some local cuisine. There are also some great museums and cultural centres to explore. The Kura Hulanda chronicles the slave trade that brought so many people here as well as the culture of the island, and the Maritime Museum details its seafaring past. Walk over the Queen Emma Bridge, a floating pontoon that links both sides of the harbour, or scale the heights of the Queen Juliana Bridge, the tallest in the Caribbean.

Things to Do When You Book a Curacao Hotel

Visit the mysterious Arawak cave paintings at the Christoffel National Park or explore the seven ‘bocas’ of Shete Boca National Park, where you can see turtles breeding at certain times of year. If marine life is your thing, visit the Curacao Sea Aquarium and meet the dolphins. Or you can experience the underwater world for real on a scuba diving and snorkelling adventure at the Marine Park. The island boasts an impressive coral and limestone cave network, caused by a drop in sea levels millions of years ago. If you love to shop, then the floating market that makes its way over from mainland Venezuela is one of the most unique experiences on the island.
