Located in the heart of West Midlands, Wolverhampton offers you everything you’d expect from a city break: great shopping, a wide choice of venues for eating and drinking, plenty of cultural entertainment, including great theatre, as well as a bustling night life.
It is well connected to several other well-known urban industrial centres, which you may want to experience while you are visiting, or you might like to venture farther afield to enjoy castles, farms and theme parks with the family.
Fly into Birmingham Airport, pick up your Wolverhampton car hire, and drive 44 minutes via the M6 to your destination. From there, several Black Country industrial towns are within easy reach: Walsall is 24 minutes away via the A454, Dudley a 22-minute drive via the A4123, Birmingham just over half an hour via the M6, and affluent Solihull 48 minutes southeast via the M6.
Your Wolverhampton hire car can be picked up in Birmingham when you arrive at the airport. Choose from the following services:
The Tar Tunnel, a 35-minute drive west into Shropshire, could be great family fun when it reopens at the end of March 2017. Miners digging the tunnel in 1787 came across a natural source of bitumen, or asphalt, which can still be seen oozing from the Tar Tunnel’s walls. Have an authentic miner experience going underground wearing a hard hat. The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, which manages the tunnel, has several other museums nearby to complete your day.
Driving a Wolverhampton car hire 40 minutes northward via Stafford Road (or the A449) and the M6, you can get to Stafford Castle. Already from the motorway you can see it looming in the skyline, with most of its original 14th century stonework preserved despite its Gothic style redesign. Stafford Castle is worth seeing as an excellent example of a motte-and-bailey system, introduced in England and Wales by the Normans – simple to build, yet formidable from a military point of view.
If you are accompanied by young children, then travelling in a hire car in Wolverhampton is the ideal way to visit Drayton Manor Theme Park (approx. a 45-minute drive). The very brave may even try a ride on the Shockwave, Europe’s only stand-up rollercoaster, and many other thrill rides. Little ones will love playing with Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends in Thomas Land. Drayton Manor Theme Park also has a zoo and a museum packed with life-size dinosaurs.
Drive on the left side of road and only overtake on the right. At roundabouts get in the correct lane as soon as possible and stay there; indicate if you’re turning right or left; give way to the traffic on the right side.
The majority of British rental cars come with a manual shift gear. You can get an automatic one if you pre-request it to your car rental company.
UK drivers are obliged by law to wear seat belts in the front and rear seats. When driving, always keep your ID, driver’s licence and car insurance documents at hand.
