Less than an hour from Hull is Boston, one of America’s most vibrant cities. Boston may have the towering glass skyscrapers of a very modern city, but it is the history that makes this place stand out. Try walking the Freedom Trail, a two and a half-mile red line around the city that takes in the museums, churches and burial grounds that make up some of the rich tapestry of the American Revolution.
On Boston’s southern border is Quincy, a small city by comparison but the gnarly coastline means it is rich with small bays and harbours. It is also home to the Adams National Historical Park, a 13-acre space with historic houses that have been the birthplace of two US presidents, though check before you visit as the park is generally closed between November and April. Weymouth is a coastal suburb of Boston, 16 miles from the city centre and 11 miles from Hull. It is an area of large ponds and parks for gentle strolls as well as Wompatuck State Park, which has bridle trails, hiking and cycling routes. Weymouth is also close to the crossroads of Route I-93 and Route 3, meaning areas such as Cape Cod are easily accessible
North of Boston and 55 miles from Hull (a car journey of about one hour and 10 minutes) is Salem. Salem was made famous during the 1692 witch trials and there are a few museums in the city that explain all to curious visitors, including live re-enactments of the trials. There are also various tourist-friendly witch shops that sell spell books and ingredients. The Peabody Essex Museum is also in Salem. This large art gallery has extensive collections of world art, as well as temporary exhibitions.
Boston is a busy city and notoriously difficult to navigate. Stick to the outlying areas and take public transport into the centre.
