Place de la Comédie is an expansive oval-shaped plaza in the centre of Montpellier. The pedestrianized square is a popular meeting place and is surrounded by grand 19th-century buildings including an opera house. Place de la Comédie has been a major part of city life for more than 250 years. Locals know it as L'Oeuf or the egg, because of its shape. Do as many of the residents do and take a stroll through the square. Admire the *Three Graces* fountain near its centre. The large water feature depicts the three graces from Greek mythology sitting on a hill surrounded by cherubs. If it’s a hot day, you may see people dipping their feet in the water. Come back to the fountain at night when it’s lit up and looks an even more impressive sight. Stand in front of the Opéra Comédie, the majestic 19th-century building where opera and classical music concerts are performed. Appreciate its elegant façade with large arched windows and columns. Check with the box office to see if there’s a performance while you are in town. Stop for lunch at one of the bistros or restaurants with their tables spilling onto the plaza. Then explore the surrounding roads that are filled with shops and bars. Just off the square is Polygone, a large shopping centre that is home to national and international retailers. Place de la Comédie is also a popular haunt in the evenings as many people dine in the restaurants or simply enjoy the atmosphere. There is usually a variety of street performers entertaining the crowds. From the end of November to the end of December the plaza hosts a Christmas market. Being in the centre of the city, the Place de la Comédie is easy to get to by bus and tram. (48 reviews) The hotel is a beautiful property in the most perfect part of center of Montpellier. The room was perfect. Great view. Great size. Clean and simply perfect. We dined at a the fine dining rest. One night. It was simply perfect . What is missing in this hotel is great experienced staff. We stayed for a week in this hotel. The young girl that helped us check out and one other young lady were ok. Everyone else. No comment. The bar manager was one of the worst we experienced. My husband had a special request. We waited for half an hour and we never received our drink so we just cancelled our order. The hotel reception the night before our departure told us there is problem with the electricity. Helping us to change our room but when we were telling him we don’t wanna move to a room smaller than our original one he gives you a service with no eye contact. We travel around the world and always in 5 star hotels. The staff of this hotel were from from what you expect in 5 stars and that was disappointing. (210 reviews) What can be said that has not already been said? Wow! We loved that the staff were as enthusiastic about a hotel, formerly a prison, as we were. The art work in the room/cell and through out the building was amazing, thought provoking and modern. The room in "prison chic" was very comfortable and spacious for two tired cycle tourists. Plus, a super secure place to store our bikes, much appreciated. Breakfast was fantastic with lots of variety and worth the price. Our only regret is not being in Beziers when the restaurant was open for evening meals. Definitely one of the most unique places we have stayed and the most memorable. Merci to the whole team that make this place a joy to stay in.
