While Montpellier’s city centre, a maze of narrow streets and historic buildings, is largely pedestrianised, a car does come in handy for checking out the many sights in the outskirts of the city.
Drive east to reach the family-friendly Mare Nostrum Aquarium and the popular gig venue Zenith Sud. Montpellier Zoo, a thrilling free attraction where you can meet lions, giraffes and more, lies to the north of Montpellier’s historic centre.
Road Trips from Montpellier
One of the main advantages of hiring a car in Montpellier is being able to explore the wider Languedoc region. To the south you can visit the sand-strips of the coastline in Palavas les Flots and Sète. Here, you can choose between contemporary art museums and days spent sunning yourself by the Mediterranean. Time your visit for the Saint Louis festival in Sete to see the water jousting and enjoy some traditional entertainment.
To the north drive out into the charming towns hidden in the hills. Visit Lodève to enjoy the archaeological and artistic collections of the Lodève Museum and to see its impressive Gothic cathedral before heading back to Montpellier in your hire car.
