8.0 out of 10, Very good, (1 review)
"My wife and I had a lovely stay in Charlestown at Honeysuckle Cottage for 5 nights. The house is well equipped and 10 minutes walk from the famous historic harbour which we were visiting for the first time. The nearest pub is even closer. There is limited parking outside the cottage but plenty of free street parking nearby. As it was, we were lucky and only once could not park near the cottage. There is a dehumidifier in the kitchen. It should be pointed out that this needs emptying of water...

Frequently asked questions

How much does a budget hotel in Charlestown cost?
Budget hotel prices in Charlestown vary, but you can find a great deal from £78 on Expedia. To find the cheapest budget hotels, be flexible with your dates—typically, off-peak and mid-week stays are cheaper. Stretch your budget further by looking for hotels with free breakfast, free parking or free airport shuttles. Sort your search results by "Price: low to high" to see our lowest rates.
Which area of Charlestown is best to stay in for cheap hotels?
For budget-conscious solo travellers seeking affordable accommodation in Charlestown, focusing on areas slightly outside the immediate harbour front tends to yield the best value. While Charlestown itself is quite compact, looking at the outskirts or nearby St Austell can often provide cheaper hotel options.

Solo travellers will find that many of the guesthouses and smaller hotels a short walk from the historic harbour, perhaps along Duporth Road or in the residential streets leading up from the port, offer more competitive rates. These locations still provide easy access to the harbour's charm, the Shipwreck Treasure Museum, and the coastal path without the premium price often associated with a direct harbour view.

Alternatively, considering St Austell, just a few miles inland, opens up a broader range of budget hotels and guesthouses. St Austell is well-connected by local buses to Charlestown, making it a viable base for exploring the area without breaking the bank.
When is the most affordable time to visit Charlestown?
The most affordable time to visit Charlestown is typically during the shoulder seasons of spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), outside of the busy summer holidays. During these months, you'll find lower prices on accommodation and fewer crowds, making for a more relaxed and budget-friendly trip.

For solo travellers, visiting in late spring or early autumn offers pleasant weather for exploring the harbourside and coastal paths without the peak season premiums. Many local eateries and shops are still fully operational, but you'll benefit from off-peak rates on guesthouses and B&Bs. You might even find better deals on local activities like boat trips or paddleboarding as demand lessens.

Couples looking for a romantic getaway can also benefit from these shoulder seasons. The milder weather is great for leisurely strolls along the historic harbour, and you'll often find more availability and better rates at Charlestown's charming pubs and restaurants.
Is Charlestown a budget-friendly destination?
While Charlestown is generally considered a more upmarket destination, travellers can absolutely experience its charm on a budget with some smart planning.

For accommodation, consider looking for guesthouses or self-catering cottages slightly outside the immediate harbour area, or for solo travellers, explore options in nearby St Austell, which is well-connected by bus. Couples can find value by booking well in advance, especially outside of peak summer season.

Much of Charlestown's appeal comes from its natural beauty and maritime history, which can be explored for free. Walking along the historic harbour, admiring the tall ships (often visible without entry fees), and strolling along the South West Coast Path offer stunning views and a refreshing experience. The nearby beaches, like Crinnis Beach, are also free to enjoy.

For dining, instead of eating at the harbour-front restaurants every night, opt for picnics with supplies from local shops or explore pubs and cafes a little further afield for more budget-friendly meals. Fish and chips from a local chippy is always a delicious and affordable option.
How can I save on a budget hotel in Charlestown with Expedia?
There are plenty of ways to save on a budget hotel in Charlestown. Join One Key™, our free travel rewards programme, to unlock Member Prices across a range of hotels. Typically, booking in advance will help you save on hotel bookings. If you're feeling spontaneous, be sure to check for last-minute deals.
What free activities should we do in Charlestown?
Charlestown, England, offers several wonderful free activities for budget-conscious travellers, particularly those who appreciate maritime history and scenic coastal walks. The village itself is a living museum, and exploring its historic harbour and surrounding natural beauty won't cost you a penny.

For solo travellers, a key free activity is simply strolling around the Georgian harbour. This well-preserved port, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a fantastic place to soak in the atmosphere, watch the tall ships (often moored there for filming), and imagine life in a bygone era. There are numerous viewpoints around the harbour offering different perspectives for photography.

Families will find the South West Coast Path, which runs right through Charlestown, a fantastic free resource. You can embark on a scenic walk in either direction; heading east towards Carlyon Bay offers stunning cliff-top views and access to a lovely beach, superb for a picnic and some rock pooling. Westward walks provide equally impressive coastal vistas and a chance to discover secluded coves.
Is it cheaper to book flights and a hotel in Charlestown as a package?
Booking a hotel and flight package on Expedia can be cheaper than booking flights and hotels separately. Bundling can lead to significant savings, especially for international travel or when booking well in advance. However, savings vary depending on factors like destination, travel dates, and availability, so it's wise to compare options. With access to over 300,000 hotels worldwide, Expedia makes it easy to build the perfect travel package.
Can I cancel my budget hotel reservation on Expedia?
Many Expedia hotel reservations are refundable, provided that you cancel before the hotel's cancellation deadline. This is often within 24-48 hours of your scheduled arrival. Be sure to check your booking confirmation for the exact cancellation policy. For maximum flexibility, use Expedia's "Fully refundable property" filter during your search to find the right budget hotel in Charlestown for you.
