Pocket Guide: Manchester Castlefield Hotels

Manchester is a major English city with a rich and proud industrial heritage. During the Industrial Revolution railways and warehouses were built here, canals were gouged out of the rock to transport goods, and the new steam-powered spinning machines never stopped making money for their owners. The city today has moved with the times but still hangs on to much of its past in venues such as the Museum of Science and Industry, and in the renovated docklands and old mills and factories. The area of the city that perhaps best epitomises this proud heritage is Castlefield. From your Manchester hotel or guesthouse you can have a wonderful day here with the whole family.

Hotels in Manchester for Castlefield Attractions

The oldest industrial canal in the world cuts right through Castlefield, lined with brick warehouses and looking much as it did in Manchester's industrial heyday. The whole area is built on an old Roman fort, and there are excavations always going on somewhere, so this is a pretty old part of the city by any standards. Although Castlefield was once a vortex of heavy industrial activity it is now a relatively quiet part of the city and many of the former warehouses have become luxury apartments. The Castlefield Urban Heritage Park, created in 1982, covers much of the area and was the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. Its purpose is to preserve the remaining cobbled streets, canals and mills for posterity in a traffic-free zone. It has proved a great success, with thousands of visitors coming here from the wider region and abroad to see some of its many attractions.

Discover Historic Castlefield from Manchester Hotels

Visit the Castlefield Artisan Market, held here every Sunday, to pick up handmade and vintage goods as well as organic food. From your local Manchester hotel or B&B, Castlefield is a great place to come and combine a leisurely walk with some sightseeing. The old canal banks are a delight to stroll along, and there's not a car in sight so it's a good, safe place to bring the kids too!
