Founded around the 1st century AD, Manchester has a proud industrial heritage, is one of the rock and pop music capitals of the world, and is also an arts, media and cultural hub with an amazing nightlife. While Manchester is famed for its trams, cobbled streets and industrial heritage, in little more than an hour’s drive from Manchester Airport you could be walking some of Britain’s most beautiful natural trails, or sitting beside a roaring fire in a traditional Peak District pub. A popular tourist destination, the Peak District National Park is large enough to never feel crowded, though you’ll definitely need a car to get to the quietest spots.
If you can’t get enough of natural beauty then take the short drive from Manchester, north up the M6, to the glorious Lake District.
