British fishing towns don't get any more scenic than Brixham in South Devon. It lies around a horseshoe-shaped harbourfront, the water filled with colourful bobbing boats. A jumble of pastel-coloured fishermen's cottages – many of which house the bed and breakfasts in Brixham – step down a hill to the town's centre. It's encircled by the achingly beautiful South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Berry Head National Nature Reserve, which overlooks the long shingle beach of Saint Mary's Bay. Brixham is not your run-of-the-mill resort town; it's a real working fisherman's town, and as such provides an authentic experience without the commercialisation of some seaside resorts.

Wake up to ocean views from your B&B, Brixham

Brixham bed and breakfasts have long been the accommodation of choice for holidaymakers coming to Devon. It doesn't matter whether you're visiting on a romantic weekend break by the sea or bringing the kids on a nostalgia-inducing British seaside holiday, because the B&Bs here have got you covered. Some are in traditional Victorian terraced houses, and have been run by the same families for more than a generation. Others have upped their game in recent years, transforming their homes into boutiques that give luxury hotels a run for their money. Some occupy spots around the pretty harbour, while others sit a little further up the hill, providing views right out across the glistening English Channel. Whatever your preference, you'll always find the perfect B&B for you when you search through the detailed listings and photos on Expedia. Search by taste, budget and date, scan through the properties and book in just a few clicks. Organising your holiday accommodation just got a whole lot simpler.

Guestrooms differ immensely from one Brixham bed and breakfast to another, but they often come equipped with all the conveniences, like a kettle for making hot drinks, a flat-screen TV on the wall and complimentary WiFi. Some might have ensuite bathrooms stocked with toiletries, while others might have a desk for catching up on a few work emails while you look out across the fabulous seascape. When you search through the listings on Expedia, you won't have trouble finding features like a free parking spot for your car, or a family-sized guestroom if you're bringing the kids. Some are even pet-friendly, so you can bring the dogs on your seaside adventure and take them for walks along the sunny coast. After waking to the soothing sounds of waves lapping onto the harbourfront, you can head downstairs for breakfast, perhaps warm croissants or a full English fry-up, washed down with juice and strong pots of coffee or freshly brewed tea. Want a very different kind of break? Head to the urban playground of Bristol, instead.

You'll find plenty of art galleries that celebrate local artists near your bed and breakfast in Brixham. Alternatively, visit the Strand to see artists at work, or even bring your own canvas to try your hand at capturing the scenery. At Brixham Heritage Museum, you can dive into the town's maritime heritage, while the harbour's Golden Hind is a scale replica of Sir Francis Drake's vessel. If you have the time, you can make your own maritime stories by hopping aboard one of the fishing trips, where you can try to hook in supper, or else just visit one of the harbourfront restaurants, which serve up extraordinarily fresh seafood.
