The vibe is laid-back at this northern Barcelona beach, but there’s still plenty of nightlife and seaside entertainment to make the area exciting for all.
Compared to the sometimes frenetic energy of Barceloneta, even on a mid-summer afternoon Bogatell Beach can seem positively relaxed. Beloved by Barcelona locals and catering to a slightly older crowd than the city’s more famous beaches, Bogatell is the perfect place to relax after a big day of sightseeing. Well-stocked with sports equipment, this beach of an up-and-coming neighborhood can also be surprisingly inexpensive. Come here to dance as the sun goes down and the beachside clubs light up.
For the best spot, come early and claim a space in the sand or a volleyball court. Get a team together with friendly locals or try out table tennis near the breakwater. As the day heats up, paddle out into the sea and turn back to see the skyline of Barcelona silhouetted against the blue sky. Dry out on the soft sand. Close your eyes and listen to the chatter of beachgoers passing by and laughing, with Catalan expressions bandied back and forth.
At the hottest part of the day, retreat to the shade of the nearby xiringuitos, beach bars that serve tapas and beer all day long. Try the area’s famous bombas, balls of mashed potato stuffed with spicy meat sauce or aioli and then deep-fried. Sip frosty drinks and watch the sun reflect off the water. Have a sumptuous lunch and exercise with a stroll down the boardwalk or a spin on some of the exercise machines. Alternatively, head back into the surf or join the action on the dance floors of the clubs after the sun goes down.
Bogatell Beach is just north of the more trafficked seaside haunts of Barceloneta, easily accessible by public transportation. Reach the beach from the center of Barcelona in 30 minutes by public transportation, 12 minutes by car or 45 minutes walking. The Sagrada Familia is a 15-minute drive or 35-minute subway ride away. Drive from the airport in 20 minutes or take public transportation in a little over an hour. Rent umbrellas and chairs. Free Wi-Fi and bicycle parking are available but there are no lockers here.
