Pocket Guide: Beijing

The Chinese capital Beijing is a bustling metropolis with 20 million people and is crammed with temples and imperial palaces. It’s also home to a section of Great Wall of China: one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It’s a city where tradition meets modernity, where the historic buildings of the Old Town sit besides towering the modern skyscrapers of the business centre.

Hotels in Dongcheng

Dongcheng, the eastern part of the old town, is immensely popular. Its showpiece, and one of the biggest attractions in Beijing, is China's Forbidden City: a former imperial residence from back when China was ruled by an emperor. From the ancient regime to paying homage to China’s most famous modern leaders, Tiananmen Square is one of the largest squares in the world; in the middle stands the mausoleum of former President Mao Zedong.

The hotel supply in Dongcheng is huge. There are approximately 20 two star hotels, 60 three star hotels, 30 four star hotels and 10 luxurious five star hotels. Looking for a cheap hotel? Book some two star accommodation most of which has high-speed internet and air conditioning. Or if you want a something a little more up-market, a hotel with spa, a sauna, indoor pool, a fitness centre and restaurants are amongst the possibilities.

Hotels in Xicheng

Xicheng is the name of the Western part of the city and contains most of the old town. In this district you can enjoy beautiful walks through the Beihai Park, a former imperial garden, which today is one of the largest public gardens of China. Xicheng is also popular due to the Houhai Lake, around which all kinds of bars, cafes and restaurants are located.

The hotel supply in Xicheng is a lot smaller and varies from two to five star hotels. Grab a family-friendly hotel or accommodation that caters specifically to business people.

Hotels in Chaoyang

Chaoyang is Beijing's largest district. This is a great place to stay if you’re looking for a night on the town. Sanlitun is an area with lots of bars and clubs and international stores. It is also the district of modern, futuristic architecture. Take a walk through the Central Business District with its skyscrapers, such as the CCTV Tower (234 meters) or cycle through the Olympic village and photograph the Beijing National Stadium (the Bird's Nest) and the Water Cube.

Chaoyang is divided into three areas. Middle Chaoyang by far has the most hotels, with approximately 90. In the north there are approximately 55 properties, some right near Beijing Capital International Airport. The hotel supply in the south is about the same as the north.
