Pocket Guide: Bass Lake

Visit Bass Lake in the Heart of the Sierra National Forest

On the banks of a 3.5-mile-long man-made lake, Bass Lake has mountains and trees as far as the eye can see and more rest and relaxation than you could ask for. It’s also one of California’s most popular spots for water sports, and just 14 miles from the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park along Highway 41 and all the wildlife you can take.

Where to Stay Near Bass Lake

Surrounded by bald eagles and deer, racoons and bears, Bass Lake has its own resort of suites and cabins and some great facilities, but if you’d prefer a little more choice, then take a look at the accommodation in nearby Oakhurst. All budgets are catered for in this lively town nine miles from Bass Lake. From international hotel chains to independently owned lodges, B&Bs and inns, you have a good range of choice and beautiful views of the surrounding forest. You might just want a place to rest your head after a day of hiking, or you could find an upscale fine-dining hotel to escape to for a bit more luxury.

Things to Do at Bass Lake

You could just sit back and watch the towering pine trees reflect in the calm blue waters of Bass Lake, or you could head off into the heart of the Sierra Nevada National Forest or Yosemite National Park. Rent a bike and enjoy the hundreds of miles of trails, or just go for a wander with a picnic and find a waterfall to sit by off the beaten track. On the lake itself you can fish, hire a boat, water ski, wakeboard and even swim in summer. In winter, try out snowmobiling in Whiskey Snowmobiling Area, or snuggle up in one of Bass Lake’s restaurants after a wander around Pines Village. Book a hotel over the 4th July weekend for the celebratory fireworks over the lake.
