The University of Basel is known across Switzerland as the oldest university in the country, with a long and celebrated history that goes all the way back to 1460. The university is also home to the largest library in Switzerland, with over three million books in its collection. Today, the University of Basel has around 13,000 students from over one hundred countries and has been listed in the top 100 universities in the world several times.

If you’re looking for accommodation close to the University of Basel, any hotel in or near the city centre would be a good choice. The main university building is very centrally located on Petersplatz, which is just a few minutes to the west of the Market Square and Town Hall. The campus is close to the Johanniterbrucke, so you can also choose a riverside hotel on either bank of the Rhine.

Basel is a pleasure to get around on public transport, so if you choose one of the wide range of hotel options near to Basel SBB or Badischer train stations, you’ll be less than 10 minutes away from the University of Basel on the no. 30 bus.

Explore the University’s Botanical Gardens

Even if you’re not travelling to visit it, you may still want to stay near the University of Basel, because it’s home to a unique green space in the heart of the city. Behind its main building you’ll find the Botanical Gardens, one of the oldest gardens of its kind in the world. It offers a multilingual audio tour to guide you around its outdoor displays and the large collection of plants in its four greenhouses.

As you’re wandering round the tranquil spaces, look out for the famous collections of cacti and orchids and check out the domed Victoriahaus, which was built in 1898 specifically for the giant water lily Victoria. And on days when the sun isn’t shining on Basel, head to the heated tropical house for a taste of life in the rainforest.
