Nice hotel, well situated on the edge of the Old Town. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The rooms were clean and spacious. The bed was comfortable and the bedding very fresh. Given the prices of everything else in Basel, this hotel was fantastic value. It’s basic, but nice. The reception staff were unprofessional and unfriendly when speaking with tourists. The mattress was extremely soft — after sleeping on it, it felt like a hole had formed, and I woke up with back pain. The entire building had a strong garlic smell, which was unpleasant. There was no extra toilet paper in the room, even though we were four people staying there. When I asked reception for more, they told me, “This is enough for you, you don’t need more,” which I found rude and unacceptable. Paid for at time of arrival, and this was the first card activity upon reaching European soil and after notifying our card company we were traveling. Immediately received notice of questionable activity on our credit card of purchases to an Indian online clothing store and one other. This hotel is, I believe, under Indian management as they had an Indian restaurant and signs up for Ayurveda. The room does not have AC. Opening the windows in our case meant taking it off the hinge and laying it open. Minimal fan. Open windows also meant exposure to traffic noise - this property is on a tram route - as well as insects. Water in shower drain backed up. TV remote batteries were corroded in place. We tried to cancel after one night of a two night reservation. Owner would not refund second night....
