Find the best Aachen areas for the activities you enjoy most.Learn more about Aachen
Learn more about Aachen

Aachen-Mitte

The historic heart of Aachen centers around its magnificent UNESCO-listed cathedral, a masterpiece of Carolingian architecture dating back to Charlemagne's era. Medieval streets wind through the pedestrian-friendly district, leading to treasures like the Gothic Town Hall and bubbling Elisenbrunnen thermal springs. This walkable area balances rich history with vibrant university life. Visitors can sample traditional printen cookies in cosy cafés or browse boutiques in cobblestone squares. With excellent train connections and cultural landmarks at every turn, Aachen-Mitte offers an authentic German experience.

Laurensberg

Laurensberg offers a peaceful suburban retreat just outside Aachen's bustling centre. Sports enthusiasts can catch events at CHIO Stadium or New Tivoli Stadium. This residential area provides direct access to Aachen Forest's hiking trails and cycling paths. The area sits conveniently near RWTH Aachen University and its medical campus. Clean, tree-lined streets create a tranquil atmosphere rarely found city centre. Though dining options are limited, the genuine glimpse into suburban German living makes Laurensberg worth exploring.

Brand

Brand offers a peaceful suburban retreat from bustling Aachen while keeping the city's attractions within easy reach. This quiet residential area sits adjacent to the Aachener Wald forest, perfect for nature walks and outdoor recreation. The neighborhood's tree-lined streets and well-maintained gardens create a leafy, tranquil atmosphere. The area provides more affordable accommodation options than central Aachen, with guesthouses and family-run pensions. Regular bus service connects to city centre in just 15-20 minutes. While dining and shopping options are limited locally, Brand's proximity to both forest trails and city amenities offers a balanced German suburban experience.

Frankenberg Quarter

Frankenberg Quarter takes you back in time through Aachen's medieval history. The iconic 13th-century Frankenberg Castle dominates this charming area with its imposing stone walls and weathered towers. Cobblestone streets wind past traditional half-timbered houses where daily German life continues largely unchanged by tourism. Castle grounds offer peaceful gardens perfect for contemplative walks amid historical surroundings. The quarter maintains an authentic residential character with limited dining and shopping options that close early evenings. This quiet district provides a genuine glimpse into Aachen's past while remaining within reach of the city's major attractions.

Pontviertel

If you're looking for some top things to see and do in Pontviertel and surrounding area, you can visit Ponttor and Aachen Town Hall.

"Double Double-pane windows facing the train tracks kept the noise to a whisper day and night. They gave me a wheelchair accessible room that had the biggest shower I've ever seen in the EU. Breakfast is extra, and continental style, but they had something hot every day and the lobby 'co-working' space was very nice. Only complaint would be the stained and worn carpets on the first floor hallways."

"Comfortable and convenient hotel for a short visit to Koln for a couple of days with my son. Great choice of food in the hotel breakfast buffet, although there were also good local cafe options a short walk from the hotel too. Easy to walk into the city centre (15-25 mins walk) to the major tourist areas/sights. Hotel has a decent amount of on-site parking, although it costs €23 Euros per day, and the entrance to it does involve you having to go around the back of the hotel and down a one-way side road to get to it. We took a wrong turn initially, so had to do another loop to access it. We stayed on the top (17th floor) and there was a great view of the river & skyline from the room. Would definitely stay here again if visiting the area."

"Our room was huge, with enough room for the bed for my husband and I, plus twin beds for our two kids. It even had a little seating area and an electric kettle which was great for cup of noodles sorts of meals. The only issue was during check-in when the staff notified us that we had two rooms booked when we knew we'd only booked one. They insisted it was Expedia's mistake and must be fixed on Expedia's end, because as a policy they do not cancel 3rd party reservations. We called Expedia and they said they only saw the one room and therefore could not cancel a second, insisting it was an error on the hotel's end. It ended up being a very frustrating experience for everyone involved but in the end they found a way for the extra room to be canceled by a manager higher up. I really appreciated the woman at the front desk for working really hard to find a solution for us. The male front desk worker had a less professional demeanor and bordered on rude. After that situation was sorted out, we were very happy with the hotel. The breakfast buffet was delicious and had tons of appetizing choices. The second elevator started working during our stay which helped with wait times. The location was excellent with a train stop just down the street, a grocery store a couple blocks away, and a laundromat across the street."
