There are lots of reasons why a city break in Leixlip will be a memorable holiday, and staying at a four star hotel is high up the list of things that will make it special. The former frontier town has a host of historical and cultural attractions, as well as some delightful natural and scenic attractions – not to mention a long connection with Guinness.
History and Heritage of Leixlip
The former frontier town was once on the border between the ancient kingdoms of Leinster and Brega, and marked the extent of The Pale – the area controlled by the English-backed rulers of Dublin. The Vikings used Leixlip as an outpost as it was the furthest point they could row their longships up the Liffey. Leixlip was the site of the Battle of Confey in which the Vikings defeated the King of Leinster.
Leixlip Castle dates back to the Norman invasion of the 12th Century and is an imposing sight – built on a rock where the River Liffey and the Rye Water join. The name is Old Norse for “salmon leap” and is named after a five-metre high waterfall that stood until 1945 when a hydroelectric dam was built.
A piece of architectural history can also be found in Leixlip in the form of Castletown House. This was the first Palladian-style house to be built in Ireland and its design influenced the architects of the White House in Washington DC. There is also a curiosity in the form of the Wonderful Barn, a cone-shaped building at the eastern edge of Castletown.
Plan Your Visit to Leixlip from the Comfort of Your Hotel
Leixlip is famous for its annual festival, which takes place in June. There is a street carnival, open-air concerts featuring well-known Irish bands such as the Hothouse Flowers, as well as plenty of entertainment in the town’s many pubs.
Leixlip’s Best Restaurants
Leixlipers have several good restaurant options in town and it’s not far from the western suburbs of Dublin so there is no shortage of places to eat. The very first Guinness brewery was set up in Leixlip in 1755 and there are lots of ways to find a glass of the black stuff in town.
