A break in Ballymena has plenty to recommend it and finding the right three star hotel is guaranteed to make your holiday memorable. The balance of bustling town and quiet countryside escape gives Ballymena a unique character. With the picturesque slopes of Slemish Mountain nearby, and the banks of the river Braid to stroll along, Ballymena is a great place to stay.

Catch Up With Ballymena’s History

Ballymena appears to be a modern town to the casual observer, but its history dates back to the early Christian settlers in Ireland. The town – known as the City of Seven Towers – has seen visitors such as the Scottish king Robert the Bruce and was involved in many of the rebellions that feature in Irish history.

The modern city of Ballymena has lots of Georgian architecture to enjoy with several churches of all denominations, including the intriguing Moravian church built by German settlers, and Arthur Cottage, the ancestral home of the former US president Chester Alan Arthur. The cottage has been restored and gives a great feel for how the family lived in the late 18th Century, with baking demonstrations over an open turf fire by staff dressed in period costume.

Ballymena’s Views and Natural Charms

The imposing Slemish Mountain has a fascinating history all of its own. St Patrick is said to have been enslaved and brought here as a child where he worked as a cowherd on the lower slopes of the mountain. The site attracts large numbers of pilgrims, especially every St Patrick’s Day on 17 March. The mountain is actually the plug of a long-extinct volcano, and it seems to emerge from the earth, dominating the landscape for miles around.

Glenariff Forest Park has a beautiful waterfall walkway, often described as a mini Switzerland, which first opened 80 years ago. The 3,000 acre forest is part of Glenariff Glen and has a plethora of riverside walks and forest trails to occupy visitors.

Shopping and Restaurants in Ballymena

Ballymena has a well-deserved reputation as one of Northern Ireland’s best shopping towns, with independent shops and big high street names all jostling for attention. You can find classy contemporary gold and silver jewellery, bespoke painted gifts and specially made teddy bears.

The multitude of farms that surround Ballymena are a superb resource for the city’s many restaurants. Locally produced fresh vegetables, fish and meat are all on the menu and there are lots of places and cuisines on offer. Relaxing with a glass of the black stuff in a mulberry garden or eating al fresco on the banks of the Braid make Ballymena a great place for a good nosh.
