“The worst food i have ever tasted”

the only good things about the hotel is how deep the pool was, and how close the beach was. However, the food, which is my weakness, was horrible. there were at times where there were not electricity or water... Do not want to come back!!!

“Good if you are on a budget”

Celuisma was an ok hotel overall, however the service was not good at all. The employees did not go out of their way to help any of the customers staying there and acted as if our stay was free of charge because its an all inclusive. I probably wouldn't go back and next time would choose at least a 31/2 star resort instead. The spa was very nice and the massage was excellent. The food was not great but the restaurant food was very good. It's okay if you are on a budget like I was, but don't expect alot.

“Half and half”

Everything was good . the buffet was ok but they invite me to a mexican Restaurant and a Italian Restaurant that have nothing to do with the culinary art. Olso the the alcoholic beverages are disgusting I think they mixed the alcohol with water before they served. But thank you any way the service was ok.

“Loved it!”

We loved it! Don't go if you are expecting a 5 star resort, because this is not it. But the food was good and the drinks were plentiful. Bring some extra ones and you'll have great service. Make sure to make reservations the morning before for dinner. If you don't like it, you can always go to the buffet. Don't miss the flaming coffee drinks with 151 in the corner of the beach party on Friday!!!!!!

Shopping
There is a market about half a mile down the beach (Orange Market) that sells all the same souvenirs that they sell in the plaza for half the price. Make sure you haggle because they will start high. Be firm with your prices and they will usually concede.

“great staff, room ammentities lacked”

the resort was beautiful, the pool, hot tub, food, and staff were great. great variety in choices of activities, and food to eat. lots of chairs and seating to relax during the day and night. the animation staff were very interactive, and always up to getting you involved in the different activities. the shows at night were great as well.even had family/children activities as well. Down side: We went with a total of 14 people to this resort. there were some basic issues with the rooms: we had no drawer in our bathroom and the toilet paper holder was broken. another 2 rooms we had friends staying in had leaks in from their ceiling, another persons A/C didnt work. But staff switched their room for them. another issue we came acrossed was common miscommunication. my boyfriend and i scheduled to have dinner at one of the restaurants at the resort. we were told by one guest service person that we couldnt make the reservation for the same night it had to be for the next night (even though some one else in our group made reservations for the same night) they told us to come back to get signed up. we came back and clarified with her that we wanted reservations for the following night. when we got there, there was no reservation down. she had written it down for the night before, even though we were told we couldnt do that, and that we even clarified with her for it to be the next night. this type of issue occured several times. but overall the experience was great.

Area recommendations
puerta plata (in the town) was a bit much, we went through a tour that dropped us off to sight see, but locals badgered us and were pushy for us to come to their stores, and buy their things. Out Back Safari day tour was AWESOME!!!! Rudy was our tour guide, and Franklin was our driver and they were wonderful. knowledgable and funny. I would also reccomend going to the top of mount isabella on the gondalla.
When to go
Our dates of travel were February 16th-23rd. This was a great time to go, it would rain for maybe 30 minutes a day and then clear right up. It rained maybe 2-3 nights during our vacation but it was still great. the temperture was perfect, not to hot and not to cool.
What to pack
I would suggest bringing a nalgene bottle. we were only given 1 cup in our bedroom, and had to make several trips down to the water cooler to get water (due to not being able to drink the tap water) You dont need to bring your own towels. they have clean fresh ones when ever you want. I would also suggest bringing a beach bag to carry your stuff around. also, carry around a sun dress or a t-shirt if your a guy as you cant eat in the dining area with-out some sort of cover up. SPF, SPF, SPF! tennis shoes and pants if you plan to go horse back riding. calculator, it helps when you are trying to barder with merchants and you are either trying to pay with pasos or american money. this can be tricky. I would suggest not bringing travelers checks, they will only give you pasos for them, the current exchange rate is 35.50 per dollar, and if you want cash you have to go to the plaza (the mall) and they charge you to get american money. I would bring cash, and get lots of small bills, 1's 5's, 10's and 20's. no one really gives change except at the plaza. no one really accepts credit/debt cards except at the mall. no one on the beach (the beach is where you schedule most of your activities, like parasailing, horseback riding, etc)
Must see
activities we participated in: Horse Back Riding: we set it up with someone on the beach (best way to get a good deal) we got to ride through a local neighborhood and on the beach. the guide was great and was willing to give us our space when we wanted it, and chatted with us when we were curious about the sights. Parasailing: this was tricky due to weather/wind. we had to walk to a different resort in order to set it up and they were not willing to negotiate a whole lot on the price, but it was SUPER fun!! well worth it. the boat trip out to the boat was a bit scary but still fun. Out Back Safari: wonderful, wonderful wonderful. cant say anything bad about this. it was great! Couples Massage: was a little confusing as to what we were supposed to do, they were not very clear about the process but still great. Gondala ride: beautiful, go early in the morning the view is better. There is a flea market about 5-10 minutes down the beach. you can get a far better deals at the flea market than at the mall. the workers at the mall generally wont barder. **side note, dont be afraid to say no to the workers and the people on the beach. give them a stearn no, and they will always come back with a lower price. it can be intimidating at first, but all they want to do is make a sale. Their business is tourists, thats how they feed their families.

“Loved my trip!”

My family and I come and stay in this hotel every year for the past 17 years! We just love the experience, and the hotel. I would suggest (for those who like to drink) that you bring a bottle of alcohol from the duty free with you, as they really water down all of the liquor, and even the juice! 7 days really doesn't seem to be enough unless you don't do many trips (which I also reccomend). I will be going for 10 days next year!

Area recommendations

“RUMBA PUERTO PLATA”

The Celuisma Playa Dorada - All Inclusive is a very nice hotel. You get what you pay for. If you are looking for ultra luxury with fine linen and gourmet dining then this is not the place. If you are looking for a very nice hotel that is an exceptional value with very friendly service then this is the place. Everyone was very friendly and happy to assist us. WE upgraded to a one bedroom suite for $6 a day more. It was a great investment. The suite was very large. We had a large living room with a spiral staircase leading up to a huge bedroom with a full bathroom and walk-in closet. There was a small safe in the closet for valuables however, there was no lock for the safe. The lighting in the bedroom was a little dim but acceptable. If you have several items to plug in (cell phone charger, camera battery charge, electric shaver, CPAP machine, clock, laptop, etc.) you may want to bring a 3-way plug and small extension chord. We had two extension chords with 3-way plugs. One we used upstairs and one we used downstairs. Refrigerators are available on request. It is great to have on to have cold beverages available. We also brought back some food from the restaurants and had a place to keep it.. The air conditioning blew ice cold. It was nice to come back to a cool room after being out in the hot sun. The entertainment crew really make a great attempt to make sure that everyone is having a good time. They are there from morning to night working very hard.

Playa Dorada is a great location. It is only minutes to downtown Puerto Plata and Ocean World (the main attraction). We also stayed in Bahia Principe - San Juan. The was about 45-50 minutes further away.
What to pack
Extremely casual. No need for dressy clothes. We were there for New Year's Eve and nobody got dressed up.
Must see
Definitely go to Ocean World. It is only 15 minutes away. We did the Royal Swim. It was the most incredible 60 minutes together with 2 dolphins and 2 trainers playing in the water.

“Believe me when I tell you this, DO NOT stay at this hotel!”

Where to begin? The experience was so horrible and unpleasant that really spoiled my 6 day stay. First, a little bit of background, this was my third visit to the Dominican Republic, but first visit to the Puerto Plata area. I booked this hotel because it was, quite honestly, the cheapest all-inclusive option during the New Year season. I had previously stayed in all-inclusives in the Punta Cana area, but during this time of year they were really expensive. As an affordable option, I booked at the Hotel Celuisma in Puerto Plata. My Dominican fiance and I stayed there for 6 days, but I was ready to walk out of there the very same day! The room we were given was worse than a 4 hour motel. The shower did not have water (less water than the faucet), it was cold, the room was in horrible condition, and the air conditioner did not work. We complained all day long (we both speak Spanish), but nothing was done. They just did not seem to care, at all. Most employees lack even the most basic customer service skills. The next day I was ready to leave the hotel, but I calmed down and politely asked to be changed to a different room after explaining that we had complained on various times and the room issues had not been resolved. We were moved to a different room where there was at least water in the shower, but the water was not always warm. I had to wait 24 hours to take a shower after a full day of flying! Unbelievable... If you want a care free, relaxing vacation book elsewhere.

Area recommendations
The hotel is located within the Playa Dorada complex which is far away from downtown Puerto Plata. If you want to go into town you need to get a tazi cab (expensive as it will charge you in US dollars). Or, if you feel adventurous and speak Spanish, you can walk to the main street and get in a carrito colectivo (public transportation) to go to the downtown area and walk around the city among the locals.

“I you enjoy eating - This is not the place to go BAD FOOD”

The Hotel food is so bad we had to go out and eat. Will never come back just because of the food. The staff is nice and helpful but it does not take away the fact that the food is terribe. We had to rent a car so we could eat. I read the reviews about the food but this worst than any review is so bad all we could eat at the buffet was pineapple and salads. The a la carte rest. are the same terrible food. Don't waste your money or you will regret it like we did. Never again.

I recommend going to Maimon for the greates Seafood and the best prices. That's were I went to escape the horrible food at Celuisma Hotel
Must see
Please do go Rafting, it will take you all day but it is well worth the experience If you book your excursions at the Beach it will be much cheaper than online
