Welcome to Edinburgh, the world’s leading festival city!
The Scottish capital proudly boasts a festivals history stretching back 70 years, and a year-round programme covering everything from science and film to theatre and comedy, from live music and children’s entertainment to literature, art, storytelling and more.
It all started in August 1947 with the inaugural Edinburgh International Festival, plus 8 companies performing outside the Festival programme which would form the prototype Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and the first iteration of what would become the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Over the years they were joined in August by The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Edinburgh International Book Festival and Edinburgh Art Festival, creating Edinburgh’s busiest month, when the city’s population is said to double!
Summertime in Edinburgh is legendary and an experience unlike any other in the world, a special time and place that everyone should be a part of at least once.
It’s not all about August though and a wide range of other amazing festivals have been added since, taking place throughout the year.
Not least of these is Edinburgh’s Hogmanay which swiftly banishes any post-Christmas blues with its multi-day, multi-arts extravaganza. Extending New Year celebrations far beyond their usual limits, the city once again throngs with guests from across the globe as Edinburgh shows the world how to party.
All this and more takes place in one of the world’s most beautiful cities, with grand soaring monuments, magnificent green spaces, winding historic backstreets and the majestic presence of Edinburgh Castle, keeping watchful eye from its dramatic rocky elevation.
It’s a truly special setting for some of the greatest arts, entertainment and culture to be found anywhere on Earth – the Edinburgh Festivals.
