Phenomenal views from the highest point in Panama

Experience the ultimate adventure atop Volcán Barú, where breathtaking views and the rare chance to glimpse both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea await
Sweeping views, lush rainforest and a sense of real achievement await at the top of Volcán Barú, the highest mountain in Panama. With an elevation of 11,401 ft (3,474 m), this epic peak is a major draw for visitors to Boquete and provides the adventure of a lifetime. The views atop the summit will leave you in awe. On a clear day, it’s sometimes possible to see both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea at the same time, a truly rare opportunity and a great moment for a panoramic photo to preserve this memory.
Boquete is to the east of Volcan Baru National Park, and there’s a convenient bus that takes people right into the park to start their adventures. Hiking Volcán Barú is simple. The closest trail to Boquete is also on the east side and those who aren’t seasoned hikers might find this their best option as it’s the easiest route.
At 27km, it’ll take at least 8 hours up and back, with steady elevation. It’s important to take plenty of snacks and water to keep yourself well fueled and hydrated, and checking the weather to make sure the top isn’t too windy is also advised. If you’re up for more of a challenge, try hiking up the gorgeous trail on the western flank, which is steeper. Alternatively, it’s possible to hire a 4x4 for a more thrilling ride to the top.
Fans of the trails say the best time to hike Volcán Barú is at night, timing your trip so you reach the summit just before sunrise. This makes the most of the cooler night air and boasts a stunning display of the rising sun over the Panama skyline. On the way back down, keep your eyes peeled for quetzals perched on branches and the many types of orchids that bloom in the cloud forest there. Set out on a Volcán Barú hike and conquer the highest point in Panama.
Exploring Panama’s astonishing scenery

Explore the captivating Lost Waterfalls trail near Boquete, where vibrant wildlife and stunning cascades reward those who embrace the challenge of Panama's lush rainforests
If the climb up to the peak doesn’t appeal, then there’s no need to give up hiking near Boquete. Natural wonders still await anyone looking to explore the incredible rainforests in Panama. Vibrant wildlife, lush tropical foliage and awe-inspiring landscapes are all on a Panama itinerary when you venture forth on one of the many rainforest trails around Boquete.
One of the most popular hiking trails is the Lost Waterfalls, which, at just under 3 miles (4 km), is quite short, but the climbs aren’t especially easy for beginners. However, for those who don’t mind putting in the work and paying the entrance fee for the trail, the rewards are amazing. Stunning cascades of water thunder through the rainforest in a demonstration of the sheer power and beauty of nature. The three waterfalls are roughly evenly spaced, which helps to break up the hike. Make sure to check the weather; if there’s been a lot of rain in the last day, some parts of the trail might not be accessible.
Another excellent hike, particularly for beginners, is the Pipeline Trail. Following, as you may have guessed, an old pipeline, the trail has a steady incline and a well-kept path, so it’s easier than some of the other nearby hiking routes. And at just over 4 miles (7 km), it’s not super long, either. This is a great trail for spotting the birds and creatures that make the cloud forests their home. Splendid quetzals with their velvety red and green plumage and long, trailing tail feathers nest here from the beginning of February, and you might hear, or even spot, some howler monkeys among the trees. There’s also a hidden waterfall at the end of the trail as an extra bonus. Check out our guide for a more in-depth look at Panama’s wildlife.
Plenty more hikes abound in the nearby area for those wishing to explore. Check out which are more difficult, as with some you may need a guide. And always remember to dress in comfortable clothing and take plenty of snacks and water to keep your energy up as you hike.
