Great location. Nice hotel. Most of the public spaces were great. Loos were a bit of a mess. Also staff at breakfast were not be helpful when coffee ran out of Milan’s coffee And the chef can’t pouch an egg. Food on Saturday night was great. Staff patient.

The room was excellent, bed was so comfortable that we slept in on our 1st night, leaving only 1 and a half hours to get ready for a wedding we were going to. The bathroom was lovely, a large shower with rainfall head. Very deep bath that we used on 2nd day. A great menu and restaurants to choose from. The bar was so welcoming with a great whiskey selection for myself and cocktail selection my partner loved. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Our stay Matfen Hall was excellent and I highly recommend. We didn’t use the spa facilities this time but definitely will on our return. Thank you to all the staff who made our stay a pleasure

Look, don't get me wrong, it's not terrible by any means. It's just that for a hotel that's trying to play at this level, it struggles with some of the basics. If you're having a short stay there's no housekeeping by default, (which they don't tell you when you arrive) but there's only a small (non-heated) towel rail, so you're going to have soggy towels on day 2. Yes, there was a (small) sign in reception saying this, but it's the kind of thing it would be good for the receptionist to mention directly. Similarly, staff in the breakfast room were lovely but there is a few minutes of waiting around with multiple staff saying "someone will be with you in a minute" before the one person who seems able to check off your room and lead you to a table turns up. Similarly, if you're checking out on a Sunday morning (which is presumably a busy check out day) there's only one member of staff on the desk so if someone has an issue, you're going to have a long wait. Like I say, it's not terrible by any means, but just a bit disorganised, so you'll need to be patient with the (lovely but overstretched) staff.

Quirky accommodation..food and facilities great but the hot tub was too cold to use so we were disappointed we couldn't use it as was the main reason I booked the shepherds hut..otherwise would book again

Great location but stain on the bed on arrival, immediately advised two members of staff but bedding wasn’t changed for us getting back to the room late that night. Advised again on check out yet no one followed up
