It served as a hospital for soldiers during the Civil War. It was also home to Joel Chandler Harris, author of the famous Uncle Remus stories. By 1956, the hotel had closed and the first floor was used for businesses. In 1999, $12 million was invested in its spectacular restoration. Mary Leaver Marshall, the original proprietor of The Marshall House, was the daughter of Gabriel Leaver, a French cabinetmaker with a shrewd vision for developing Savannah's land. The Hotel has its original staircases (some of the spindles and gingerbread have been recreated), original wood floors, fireplaces, brick walls, and the doors to each guest room are original as well. The Atrium was the courtyard and has been encased with a glass ceiling to give the sensation of what once was. Majestic Southern Live Oak trees line each side arching over to form a living, green canopy high above. Spanish moss hangs down from the branches waving in the sultry late afternoon breeze not unlike grandpa’s wispy grey beard. The eligible beauty wearing a layered flowing white dress, head back laughing at something someone had called out. One elegant gloved hand holding the reins and the other clutching at her oversized hat which is threatening to blow away in the breeze. An interesting fact is, that Spanish Moss is neither from Spain nor is it a moss and is instead is a flowering plant in the family of bromeliads. Being an epiphyte it absorbs nutrients and water through its leaves from the air and rainfall. It generally grows upon larger trees in tropical and subtropical climates, native to much of Mexico, Bermuda, The Bahamas, Central America, South America, southern United States, and the West Indies. In terms of parking, definitely just park on the street, it’s only $1.50 outside the hotel, which is cheaper than parking in the lot. Do not park in the park across the street as I learned this is actually $2.50 an hour. Really great location, perfect to walk everywhere and appreciate that they had a curbside unload area. A bit high on the pet fee I think for a cat for 2 nights and one cleaning comment if I may, don’t use such a strong room spray, and dust the blinds once in awhile ;) Overall, this is my go to place shld I ever be back in Savannah and thoroughly recommend to anyone else to go!
