It is worth staying at this hotel purely for it's unusual architecture plus the location right next to the iron bridge (that probably sounds odd but it actually works). It's right on a v. convenient tram stop too."

"We had a room with a balcony overlooking the Douro. The hotel is on the south side of the river, almost in the shadow of the Luis 1 bridge, with a gorgeous view of Porto proper. Good bed, pillows, robes and towels. The only real issue was that the room itself was quite small. Nice shower but otherwise a tight bathroom. The staff was universally well-motivated and helpful. I renew my frequent complaint about 'innovations' in light switches and thermostats. The light switches were, for reasons that defy logic, twist knobs. Twist left for toilet, twist right for shower, twist again to turn off. Why? And the thermostat was ridiculous, tiny, confusing graphics on a dim postage stamp sized LED screen. To all hotel architects and designers: the only thing you should concern yourselves with is the ease of the guest. Red arrow for heat up, blue arrow for cold down, fan higher or lower. That's it. Simple buttons. Stop being clever, your guests do not want a tutorial in lights switches and thermostats."

"This is one of the best hotels we've ever stayed in. The location is a reasonable distance from the busy city of Porto over the river, while still being very accessible on the Gaia side, near the port wine cellars. We booked a studio room overlooking the Douro River with a stunning balcony view of the Luís I Bridge that we had to see to believe. Some days we took a short walk along the river to the lower cable car station to take in amazing views on the ride to the top. The upper station is next the top level of the bridge, so we enjoyed the beautiful high walk across into the south of the city. We sometimes ordered a ride because everything is drivable within a few minutes and this skips the demanding hill climbs. The hotel atmosphere is upscale without being pretentious. Immaculately clean, with an industrial modern styling and tasteful furniture throughout. We found our room to have some natural sounds of the river, while still being quiet at night. There is a minor road outside but the double balcony doors keep any noise out. The amenities are impeccable. We used the spa, the gym, and ate at the restaurant which is fantastic for dinner. Breakfast is very good. Snacks and drinks in the room are reasonably priced if you want more than the generous complimentary items. All the staff are so attentive at every point - wine suggestions with dinner, knowledgeable therapists in the spa, friendly housekeepers. We loved coming back to our room to thoughtful daily gifts and snacks."

"Very comfortable clean room in a great location, check in process was easy and no need to carry keys round with you. Sandra the host was lovely and responded to queries promptly. We paid for breakfast on the last day and it was great. The pool is very small on the roof and our planned pool day was scuppered by a poor weather day! The only thing that could be improved is wifi as it didn’t work in our room, fortunately we had working data."

"Very friendly and helpful staff, great bar and restaurant, excellent spa, indoor and outside pool options, great access to beach and boardwalk leading to Gaia and Espinho (two smaller cities south of Porto). Rooms also have great view. Very upscale. The only downside is that it’s about a 25 minute car ride to Porto, but the neighboring cities also offer a cool beach town experience (but definitely go to Porto). We would definitely return!"
