Turtle Beach is one of Jamaica’s best beaches and the main beach in Ocho Rios, less than two hours’ drive from Montego Bay. It’s a lively beach, backed by apartment blocks, condos and beach resorts with loads to do.
Palm and almond trees line Turtle Beach and the shallow shoreline is perfect if you’re a family with small children.
You pay a small fee for the beach, but when you’re there, you’re set for the day. Relax on sun beds under a rented umbrella, make use of the changing rooms, toilets and showers and just enjoy the atmosphere filled with smooth reggae music.
And when it’s meal time, tuck into some spicy jerk chicken or traditional curried goat at one of the restaurants serving typical Jamaican cuisine. For snacks, head to one of the snack bars and food hawkers along the sand.
If you want to do something a little more active than just sunbathing and swimming, there are plenty of water sports places that hire sea kayaks, jet skis and scuba gear. Whether it’s adrenalin inducing or the perfect way to explore the shoreline, you’ll find something you want to try.
Even a simple snorkelling adventure off the shore will have you swimming with parrot fish, eels, barracuda, trumpet fish, butterfly fish and nurse sharks.
When you’ve finished sunning yourself on the sand, visit some of the other well-known attractions near Turtle Beach. Famous Dunn’s River Falls, where you can swim in the cascading waters, is a few minutes away, as is Mystic Mountain, which is filled with a whole host of adventure activities in the rainforest, from zip lining to a ride on the canopy chair lift for amazing views across the island.
For something completely different, head along to Heritage Beach for a private horse-riding tour of the area. You should be a reasonable rider to be able to ride along the beach and through the old Taino Indian hunting ground. You’ll learn about the native islanders and the history around Turtle Beach.
