The historical market town of Tewkesbury lies halfway between Worcester and Cheltenham, along the River Avon. It's best known for its 900-year-old abbey, whose imposing Norman tower and vaulted ceiling are a marvel to see. If you're looking for a slice of Old England, you can't do better than Tewkesbury, with its jumble of riverside properties, series of walking trails and heritage centre. Plus, you're just a short drive from the achingly beautiful Cotswolds, a landscape of rolling hills and pretty villages. Throw in a bustling high street packed with independent shops, boat trips down the river and a smattering of annual festivals, and you've got a mighty fine destination for a weekend getaway.
It doesn't matter whether you are coming in the height of summer, the depths of winter, or anywhere in between, bed and breakfasts in Tewkesbury are always ready to welcome you. While it's possible to book a night in one of the hotels, why would you, when you can save some cash and enjoy the home-away-from-home feeling of a B&B? Plus, many of the owners have been running their B&Bs for years and know the area like the back of their hand. Sold on a B&B? You can always find your perfect match on Expedia. You'll find each property listed, complete with a rundown of the facilities, and candid photos of the guestrooms and communal areas. Booking is completed in just a few clicks. Arranging your accommodation just got a whole lot easier. The B&Bs come in all shapes and sizes. Some are quaint riverside cottages with just a handful of rooms. Others have renovated in recent years, and offer boutique accommodation that gives luxury hotels a run for their money. There is even a sprinkling of country cottages, if you'd rather be closer to nature and the Cotswolds.
If you've brought your car, you'll find some of the B&Bs have secure parking spots, a big plus in a town where they come at a premium. Checking in is always a breeze, thanks to the helpful owners, and while you're settling into the room you can start to make use of the facilities. Click on the kettle to make a cup of tea, flick on the TV to catch up on the latest news and kick back and relax on your comfortable double bed. If you prefer a guestroom with an ensuite bathroom, you can always find one on Expedia – and some even come with a separate shower unit and tub. You don't even need to leave the dogs at home, if you nab one of the pet-friendly bed and breakfasts in Tewkesbury. After a comfortable night's sleep, you can kick-start the day with a hearty breakfast. Choose from options like generous full English fry-ups, fruit and yogurt, or granola, washed down with juice and pots of coffee. If you're looking for a city break instead, maybe a few nights checking out the things to do in Bristol might be more your speed.
You'll find plenty of things to do near your Tewkesbury bed and breakfast, whatever time of year you visit. If you're an outdoorsy type, you'll be bowled over by the riverside walks and hiking trails in the nearby Cotswolds. Lace up your boots and head off on bracing countryside walks. Afterwards, you can return to your cosy B&B. A good introduction to the town is the Tewkesbury Heritage and Visitor Centre, a state-of-the-art facility that tells its fascinating story, from early settlers to the Civil War. There's more history at the Town Museum, which is housed in one of the only 17th-century properties left. In the evening, try to score tickets for one of the performances at the Roses Theatre, or simply hop into one of the restaurants or cosy pubs for a drink and a bite to eat.
