Stolzenfels Castle is a glorious medieval fortress secluded in a dense forest next to the Rhine River. This ruined 13th-century castle was rebuilt in the 1800s as a Gothic-style masterpiece with a tall central tower. Marvel at the architectural feats and the interior period décor of this spectacular castle. Wander along the various pathways and through the halls of the castle to appreciate its features, designed by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the early 19th century. It has a light feel, due to the open terraces, spacious halls and flat roofs. Make your way through the various chambers to admire the ornate décor. Among the highlights is the Knights’ Hall. Inspect frescoes portraying scenes from medieval German history to learn about the country’s past. Examine weapons and armour among the many relics showcased in the rooms. Ascend to the roof terrace above the castle chapel and capture photos of the spectacular views of the Rhine Valley to the east. Learn the history of this fascinating site, which was ruined by the French, before future Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm IV rebuilt it as his summer residence. Many of the rooms are frozen from the time of his departure. Imagine the daily lives of the aristocratic guests who stayed here, including Queen Victoria. There is a fee to enter the castle. Prices are discounted for kids. The site is open to the public daily from morning until late afternoon Tuesday through Sunday from March through October and on weekends during February and November. Guided tours in German are available, with a guidebook in English. Stolzenfels Castle is 4 miles (7 kilometres) south of the centre of Koblenz. Drive or take a bus south along the western bank of the Rhine River to get here.
