Visit the home of the Alamo

A famous Southern city with close links to Texan liberty, San Antonio is most famously known as the location of the Alamo Mission where 189 brave Texans sacrificed their lives defending their state against the Mexican soldiers – a pivotal moment in the Texas Revolution.

Today San Antonio retains its military links thanks to a number of major bases in the area, but offers a unique experience for anyone looking to experience the magic of the American South.

With such a rich history, it is now surprise that San Antonio has taken steps to preserve its past. Aside the Alamo itself, the downtown River Walk is San Antonio’s most popular attraction – beloved by locals and visitors alike. One of the world’s first major urban river regeneration projects, the River Walk is a network of beautiful pathways along the San Antonio River lined by cosy bars, unique shops and restaurants serving local favourites.

Connecting many of the city’s main attractions together, the River Walk is popular all year round, playing host to spectacular Christmas lights and flowery river floats during the Springtime Fiesta San Antonio – a city-wide festival of over 100 events that honours the battles of The Alamo and San Jacinto.

Amongst other attractions, the River Walk takes in several of San Antonio’s key sights including the famous Arneson River Theatre with its outdoor performance space, a small heart shaped island popular with weddings called Marriage Island and the San Antonio Museum of Art.

Other attractions accessible from the walk include the HemisFair ’68 park built for the World Fair of that year, the exotic-themed Aztec on the River historic movie theatre and the Alamo Mission itself. Conveniently close to the Alamo is the San Antonio Cavalry Museum, a fascinating collection of artefacts and exhibits where visitors can sometimes see re-enactments of famous cavalry battles.

Whilst San Antonio’s River Walk makes many of the city’s attractions incredibly easy to navigate, even more family fun can be found outside the downtown area. For white knuckle lovers, Six Flags Fiesta Texas offers incredible theme park thrills and spills, whilst SeaWorld San Antonio mixes learning about all kinds of sea creatures with wet and wild water park excitement. San Antonio is also home to the unique Morgan’s Wonderland – a special theme park designed for those with special needs or accessibility issues.

With so much to do, San Antonio is sure to leave your stomach rumbling – so why not help yourself to a bowl of chilli in the city where it was invented and watch the sun go down with a beer from the Pearl Brewery?
