This narrow corridor of green space running from Roath to Cyncoed is one of the most popular public parks in Cardiff, holding a Green Flag that emphasises the quality of its natural environment and facilities. With an undeniably attractive Victorian atmosphere of elegance and tranquillity, Roath Park is the perfect spot to relax, enjoy sublime views of the hills surrounding the Welsh capital and engage in a variety of pastimes.

The park is divided into several distinct garden sections, including the pretty Botanic Gardens, the Wild Gardens and the Rose Gardens. Wander the glasshouse conservatory and you might find orchids and palms, green water dragons or even the peculiar whistling ducks. Ornamental floral displays dot the park, and are very well maintained.

A 30-acre lake acts as a centrepiece, ideal for a spot of boating or fishing. You can’t miss the iconic lighthouse commemorating Robert Scott and his ill-starred expedition to the Antarctic, which launched from Cardiff. There are several islands that provide a habitat for water birds such as cormorants, herons and swans, and just walking around the lake’s perimeter is hugely enjoyable - there is something new to see around every corner. Other reasons to visit Roath Park include excellent children’s playgrounds, a cafe and a kiosk selling ice cream, and the recreation ground, which has very good sporting and leisure facilities. A bowling green and tennis courts come with a pavilion and changing rooms, while rowing boats can also be hired here. Got an afternoon free in Cardiff? Your time would be well spent here.
