The most popular day trip from the German capital, Potsdam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, charms visitors with its traditional architecture, stunning period buildings and old world character. As well as its many important buildings and parks, Potsdam also offers restaurants serving traditional German cuisine, a choice of pubs and a wide selection of great hotels.
Central Potsdam – The picturesque centre of Potsdam is full of cultural attractions, restaurants, shops and hotels. Pick up souvenirs on the pedestrianized Brandenburger Strasse, enjoy a drink at one of the many outdoor cafes or wander the streets and soak up the historic atmosphere.
Park Sanssouci – Potsdam’s headlining attraction, Park Sanssouci is dotted with sculptures, follies, formal gardens and contains the Schloss Sanssouci, one of the most iconic buildings in Potsdam. Spend an entire day exploring the park and palace buildings, soaking up the atmosphere and admiring the stunning views across the local area.
Alexandrowka – Located in the north of the city, Alexandrowka was built as a Russian colony in the first half of the 19th century. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage area, Alexandrowka’s distinctive buildings have been beautifully preserved for modern visitors to enjoy.
Dutch Quarter – Made up of 169 early 18th century red brick buildings, Potsdam’s Dutch Quarter is said to have the best collection of Dutch-style houses outside of the Netherlands.
The stand out sight in Potsdam is the Sanssouci Palace and the park that surrounds it. Built in the late 18th century as the summer residence of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, the palace is one of the most spectacular in Germany. Other popular sights include the ornate buildings of the Dutch Quarter, the beautiful Park Babelsberg with its gothic castle, the old market in the historic city centre and Schloss Cecilienhof, site of the historic Potsdam Conference in 1945. A number of other gardens, palaces and period buildings dot Potsdam’s landscape, making it the perfect place for a weekend of culture and discovery.
Sightseeing is the order of the day in Potsdam and the majority of the people who visit the city head straight to one of its many parks and palaces. Another major attraction in the area is Filmpark Babelsberg, a movie theme park on the outskirts of Potsdam. A great place to learn about German Cinema and find out a few tricks of the trade, the park is one of the biggest of its kind in Europe. To work off that bratwurst you can hire a kayak and explore the network of rivers and lakes that surround the city or rent a bike and explore Potsdam’s attractions on two wheels.
