In the heart of Genoa is Piazza De Ferrari, the city's main square, a centre point for major events. Sandwiched between Genoa's old town and modern centre, Piazza De Ferrari is surrounded by opulent buildings and is famous for its spectacular bronze fountain. Leading off Piazza De Ferrari are the atmospheric alleyways of Genoa's Medieval Quarter that wind their way down to the old port.

If you want to stay in a central location within striking distance of most of Genoa's major attractions, find accommodation near Piazza De Ferrari. From stylish boutique and luxury hotels to budget motels and family-friendly accommodation, there is a good choice of places to stay near this beautiful central square.

History of Piazza de Ferrari

From leading Italy’s finances at the end of the 19th Century to hosting G8 Summit in 2001, Piazza De Ferrari has played an important political and financial role down the centuries. Take time to see the Art Nouveau Palazzo della Borsa, the country's former stock exchange, which was built in 1912. Visit Doge's Palace, which dates back to the 1200s and is now a museum and cultural centre with beautifully frescoed walls.

Culture in Piazza de Ferrari

Ask the concierge at your hotel to arrange tickets for Genoa's main opera house. The Teatro Carlo Felice, on the Piazza de Ferrari, has a comprehensive repertoire of opera, ballet and drama for a 2,000-strong audience. Although much of the 1827 building was destroyed by bombing during World War II, it was rebuilt in 1991 to host an 88-piece orchestra. The building retains some of its original features, including the columns and terrace overlooking Via XXV Aprile. Designed by the same architect is the square's art school, the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti (Academy of Fine Arts), also worth a look.
