Peace Gardens

Take a moment to relax or check out stunning water features and statues in this tranquil park fronting the splendid Sheffield Town Hall.

The Peace Gardens encompass a large, spacious plaza with grassy areas in the heart of the city. Enjoy the serene and natural setting of this pedestrianized square, away from the clamour of city life. Admire the many water fountains that add an idyllic feel to these picturesque gardens.

As you enter the gardens, you will pass by one of the four pairs of fountains that flank the plaza’s four entrances, known as the Holberry Cascades. The pouring motion of these fountains represents the molten metal in Sheffield’s steel industry. The main water feature is the Goodwin Fountain, which comprises of 89 individual jets.

Inspect the Spanish War Memorial, which lists the names of the local volunteers who fought in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. The plaque also commemorates those who campaigned and sent supplies for the battle against fascism.

Admire the Bochum Bell, a gift from Sheffield’s twin city in Germany that reflects their shared identity within the steel industry. It stands on the upper flowerbed beside Pinstone Street.

Sit on a bench or patch of grass with a picnic on a warm day. Relax with snacks and refreshments at one of the cafés that look out over the square. The magnificent 19th-century Sheffield Town Hall takes up the northern end of the plaza. Snap photos of its elaborate façade, which has a clock tower, friezes and sculptures. Enter the building to see its public display of silverware.

The Peace Gardens are located in the most central part of Sheffield and provide a relaxing place to rest during a walking tour. Walk northwest for 10 minutes to reach the plaza from Sheffield Train Station or take a bus to the stop beside the square. Nearby sites include the Sheffield Hallam University and the Millennium Gallery.
