Pocket Guide: Porto Antico Palazzo Ducale Hotels

Stay near Palazzo Ducale

Built in 1298, Palazzo Ducale was the seat of Genoa’s rulers, the Doges, from the 14th century until it was transformed into an art museum.

The opulent Palazzo Ducale was constructed during Genoa's golden age when it was emerging as one of the Mediterranean's strongest economic powerhouses, after defeating several republics in battle. Today, the palace hosts major art exhibitions, cultural events and markets.

Palazzo Ducale is right in the heart of the city on Genoa's main square, Piazza de Ferrari. With a great location on the edge of the city's Medieval area, near the warren of narrow streets known as caruggi, this is a fabulous place to base yourself while staying in Genoa. From hip boutique hotel and international big-brand hotels to purse-friendly B&Bs and family-friendly accommodation, there are places to stay to suit all personal tastes and budgets.

History of Palazzo Ducale

Built during the Middle Ages, Palazzo Ducale became known as Doge's Palace in 1339 when it became the setting for the election of Genoa's first doge (ruler), Simon Boccenegra. Following a fire in 1777, Palazzo Ducale was refurbished in a Neoclassical style by architect Simone Cantoni.

In 1992, when Genoa had a city-wide facelift as part of the celebrations to mark 500 years since Christopher Columbus discovered America, Palazzo Ducale was also renovated. Then in July 2001, Palazzo Ducale hosted the G8 Summit, attended by world leaders from Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and more.

Visiting Palazzo Ducale

Even if you're not attending an art exhibition at Palazzo Ducale, the building merits exploration for its stunning architecture, picture-pretty courtyards and sumptuous rooms with floor-to-ceiling frescoes and glittering chandeliers. Don't miss the doges’ chapel on the top floor, where you’ll find frescoes by Giovanni Battista Carlone, illustrating Genoa’s rich history. Another public room, the Salone, is decorated with paintings by Giovanni David. The Palazzo Ducale also houses shops, bars and restaurants, including a large rooftop restaurant with sweeping city views.

Stay in the historical area surrounding Palazzo Ducale to be within easy reach of Genoa's top sights and attractions.
