Gosforth

This affluent suburb has a family-friendly vibe and is a gateway to idyllic parks, riverside trails and golf courses.

Gosforth is one of Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s most popular residential neighbourhoods where you’ll find lush green spaces, sports clubs and varied restaurants. Sip on a pint of beer at a traditional English pub, play a round of 18 holes, enjoy a day at the races and visit historical landmarks.

The retail and commercial heart of Gosforth is the High Street. Mingle with the locals that come to do their grocery shopping, run errands and dine at cafés and restaurants. Sample real ales and feast on hearty dinners, such as sausages and mash, at old-fashioned pubs. Gosforth Civic Theatre is a great place to watch live music and theatre performances.

With tree-shaded pathways, pretty flowerbeds and grassy lawns, Gosforth Central Park provides a scenic respite from the bustle of suburban life. The park has a children’s playground, a bowling green and tennis courts. Observe a cricket match at the adjacent cricket ground in summertime. Nearby Gosforth Parish Church of St. Nicholas has an interesting collection of stained-glass windows.

Enjoy Newcastle’s natural beauty by following the course of the Ouseburn river through flourishing vegetation and past small waterfalls to Jesmond Dene woodland park. See the ruins of the 12th-century St. Mary’s Chapel and the mid-19th century Banqueting Hall, built by the visionary industrialist William George Armstrong. Town Moor is a 1,000-acre (405-hectare) open space home to grazing cattle and the host of a fairground in June. In the moor’s southeast corner is Exhibition Park, which has a brewery, playground and walking trails.

For a fun day out, attend horse racing events at Newcastle Racecourse. Golfers have a choice of several clubs located within a short drive of Gosforth, including the City of Newcastle Golf Club, Gosforth Golf Club and Northumberland Golf Club. Visitors are welcome and equipment rentals are available.

Gosforth is served by the Regent Centre and South Gosforth subway stations, among others. Public buses also travel regularly to and from Newcastle-upon-Tyne city centre.

Nice hotel very close to the station. Room was small but nice and clean. The bathroom sink looked nice but the tap was so close to the edge of the sink I couldn’t wash my hands without water spilling over the counter top. Staff were friendly and self service breakfast was good

Stunning castle location, as its well over 100 years old wonky floors should be expected.
