Housed in a phenomenal structure, the Lyon Museum of Fine Arts is the city’s hub for artistic works. Varied pieces from fascinating Egyptian antiquities to stylish postmodern displays hang in the galleries of this former Benedictine convent from the 1600s. Spend an afternoon browsing through some of Europe’s finest works of art in this impressive building. The large museum is split into five main departments: Antiquities, Art Objects, Medals and Coins, Sculptures and 13th- to 21st-century Paintings. Take a guided tour in English of the entire museum on Saturdays or remain within your favourite department to study the works. The tour takes about 1 hour. Book in advance for groups by calling the museum. Alternatively, follow one of several 90-minute audio guided tours. Browse Egyptian gems, such as the *Coffin of Isetemkheb* and the *Gate from a Temple at Medamud*. Peruse intriguing items from Persepolis, Greece and the Roman Empire. Explore the Medal Collections to see the *Treasure of Terreaux* and the *Stater of Vercingetorix*, which is a Celtic gold coin from 52 B.C. with a head of curls on one side and a galloping horse on the other. Appreciate impressive paintings, such as Claude Monet’s *Agitated Sea at Etretat* and Pablo Picasso’s *Woman Seated on the Beach*. Marvel at Auguste Rodin’s sculpture *The Temptation of St. Anthony*. The museum is closed on Tuesdays but otherwise open daily from morning until early evening. There is an entrance fee to see the collections as well as an additional amount for the exhibitions. The Lyon Museum of Fine Arts is on the small peninsula between the two main rivers of La Saône and Le Rhône. Take the metro to the Hôtel de Ville-Louis Pradel stop in the centre of the city and walk west for 3 minutes to reach the museum. It has particular rules, swimming cap and professional swimwear must be worn and additional charge for guests. I tired to find information about the pool before we arrived. We could not use the facilities with the swimming costumes/shorts we had, we were advised to buy the suitable items at the pool. Construite vers 18401, c'est un bel exemple d’une architecture populaire dite « canuse », liée à l'industrie de la soie qui a profondément marqué le quartier. Mais c'est également un lieu qui symbolise quelques grands moments de l'histoire lyonnaise. La révolte des Canuts[modifier | modifier le code] Une plaque commémorative indique que « Dans la cour des Voraces, ruche du travail de la soie, les canuts luttaient pour leurs conditions de vie et leur dignité ». La cour des Voraces tient certainement son nom d'un groupe d'ouvriers canuts nommés les Voraces, qui s'illustrèrent par leurs insurrections républicaines de 1848 et 1849. On raconte que la Cour des Voraces (également appelée « Maison de la République ») a servi de refuge aux ouvriers canuts lors de leurs révoltes3. Cette cour devint célèbre, dit-on, par une bataille qui opposa les canuts aux soldats de l'armée régulière[réf. nécessaire]. Compte tenu de la date de construction, il peut s'agir de combats ayant eu lieu lors de la seconde insurrection des Voraces4 en 1849. Une autre hypothèse est évoquée : l’immeuble aurait abrité la loge d’une organisation mutualiste de Canuts : le Devoir mutuel. Le mot « Dévoirant » - c’est-à-dire les membres du Devoir mutuel -, déformé, a fini par donner le mot « Voraces ». Il se dit aussi que le mot "voraces" est issu du fait que ces canuts luttaient contre la diminution du volume du pot de vin. En effet le pot de vin devenait de plus en plus petit, mais le prix restait inchangé. (cf. Les Voraces (Lyon)) Seconde guerre mondiale. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les traboules lyonnaises, lieux sombres et secrets (peu connus des étrangers) dont la configuration favorisait les activités clandestines, ont permis aux réseaux de résistance d’échapper à la surveillance de l'occupant allemand. La Cour des Voraces est souvent évoquée comme symbole de cette résistance5.
