Missouri Holiday

In the Show-Me state, visitors explore two major rivers. The region has played important roles in history, both factual and fictional.

Much of the excitement and lore of Missouri centers on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. As part of the Louisiana Purchase, the state represented a starting point for travelers making major westward migration.

St. Louis is a bustling city on the Mississippi River. Appreciate the city’s diverse attractions, from the majestic Cathedral Basilica to the more earthly factory tour of the Anheuser-Busch brewery. Along the way visit the St. Louis Zoo and the kid-centered City Museum or relax in Forest Park.

The showpiece of St. Louis is the Gateway Arch. Ride the tram to the top height of 630 feet (192 meters). On clear days, you’ll see for 30 miles (48 kilometers) in any direction. The arch represents the role St. Louis played over 200 years ago as a gateway for pioneers traveling westward in the Louisiana Territory. Take a riverboat cruise to see daytime or evening views of the city’s modern skyline. Travel to the mouth of the Missouri River to investigate the workings of the locks and dam.

Visit the small northern town of Hannibal to see the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum and appreciate how the nearby Mississippi River inspired the adventures of the author’s well-known fictional characters, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Several blocks away, tour the Hannibal History Museum, with an exhibit about another local resident, the “unsinkable” Molly Brown, who survived the sinking of the Titanic.

In the southern part of the state, Branson has evolved as a major center for live music and wholesome family fun. At the more than 50 theaters you can find music from ABBA to Dolly Parton to fantastic tenors, along with comedy and magic.

Not far away are Missouri’s Ozark Mountains, fantastic for hiking and fishing. Get a guide and go spelunking or cave exploring. Marvel Cave lives up to its name, especially on a tour led by a guide in period costume carrying a lantern for light. Visit the Silver Dollar City theme park to access the cave.

Q: Should I book a car while on holiday in Missouri?

A: Unless you're really into cars, public transportation is probably the easiest and best way of moving around the busy streets of St. Louis or Springfield. With no costly parking fees (or trips to the gas station) to worry about, you'll be able to relax and check out the city's popular sights with ease. If your aim is to hightail it straight out of town and take in the region of Rivers Township or elsewhere, grabbing the keys to a rental is a terrific option. Browse through our guide to Cheap Car Hire in Missouri, book a ride and go wherever you want at your own pace.

Q: Which airports can I fly in to for a holiday to Missouri?

A: Although there are many airports in Missouri, most international flights arrive at:

  • St. Louis, MO (STL-Lambert-St. Louis Intl.): 169 international flights per month.
  • Kansas City, MO (MCI-Kansas City Intl.): 44 international flights per month.

Q: What are the most popular types of hotels for a holiday to Missouri?

A: Many travellers choose to spend their getaways in hotels. Some enjoy the amenities and comfort of motels or condos, while others choose to book bed & breakfasts. Wherever you want to lay your head, Missouri has lots of options for all budgets.

Q: What does a Missouri holiday booking with Expedia include?

A: Hotels, cars, flights — and activities and experiences. Expedia has everything you need for the ideal holiday. Choose just one of these options or secure one of our awesome travel packages. You've got the freedom and flexibility to tailor your getaway to Missouri just the way you like it.

Q: What is the best way to save money on my holiday to Missouri?

A: Were you aware that Expedia rewards you simply for bundling your Flights, Hotels, Activities and more? Put together your dream getaway and see just how much you'll save by booking a package. Missouri, here you come!

Q: What are the best things to do in Missouri?

A: St. Louis Art Museum should be very close to the top of your itinerary if you're staying a while in St. Louis.

Don't stuff around — start with the best. In Springfield, Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World is all that and more.

We recommend visiting Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art if Kansas City is going to be your base in Missouri.
