In the midst of America’s Great Plains, Kansas City feels like a metropolis. Jazz bars, a speedway circuit, museums and shopping malls fill this city, but a short drive out into the countryside and you are surrounded by tallgrass prairies, cornfields and rolling hills. With car hire Kansas City is easy to navigate. The I-70 runs through the south and out to the college town of Lawrence, which is 40 minutes away. With art galleries, funky restaurants and bars it is well worth the trip. A 40-minute drive north of Kansas City is Smithville Lake, a picturesque camping spot with golf courses and boat hire.
Kansas City Airport is 20 miles from the city centre - a drive of about 25 minutes, and driving is the quickest way of travelling to and from. There is also a bus available from RideKC, which is inexpensive and doesn’t require booking.
For a hire car in Kansas City head to Main Street near Penn Valley Park where a number of the big brands are based. It is one of the main roads through the city centre and can be busy, but it also provides an easy to navigate route out.

An hour’s drive west of Kansas City is Topeka, a busy city full of parks set around the winding Kansas river. The city of Olathe is a drive of 40 minutes south via the I-35. Take a self-guided tour of the numerous parks, churches and historic homes, or head to Lone Elm Park for beautiful wildflower prairies. Alternatively head north to St Joseph, a city on the crossroads of the I-29 and MO Highway 36 and half an hour from Kansas City. The Patee House Museum tells the story of legendary outlaw Jesse James, who died in St Joseph, and the Pony Express museum gives a great insight into local history. The parks and trails that follow the banks of the Missouri river also offer pretty hiking tours and picnic spots.
Driving in Kansas City is busy, but there are great road links. The I-70 and the I-35 run through the city and across the Middle American states. There are some toll roads in the area, so be prepared to stop and pay.
