Situated in the south-western reaches of the city, Mirafiori is one of Turin's more urban districts. Split into Mirafiore Nord and Mirafiore Sud, the area borders the Lingotto and Santa Rita neighbourhoods. Mirafori is also the birthplace of Fiat, the Italian motoring giant, which opened its first car factory here in 1939.
Once a heavily industrial area, Mirafiori Nord has seen a resurgence over the past few decades. There is now a variety of accommodation in Mirafiori, from budget chains to mid-range independent hotels and modern business-friendly properties. The latter make Mirafiori an attractive base for business travellers visiting the conference centre at nearby Lingotto.
Motor manufacturing was once the biggest industry in Turin, and the area was heavily populated during the Sixties when Fiat's production boomed. In recent years Mirafiori has attracted a winter sports crowd who come for Palasport Tazzoli, an ice skating arena built for the 2006 Winter Olympics.
For a spot of regal history, visit the neoclassic Mausoleum of Bela Rosin, the final resting place of the mistress and later wife of King Victor Emmanuel II. You’ll find it in Parco Pubblico Gustavo Colonnetti, an expansive green space in the south of the Mirafiori neighbourhood.
You'll never go hungry staying in Turin. While Mirafiori may not have the fine dining establishments found in the city centre, most Mirafiori hotels have good restaurants and bars, and there are many local trattorias and pizzerias dotted around the district.
Wherever you stay in the Mirafiori district, you'll have easy access to all four corners of Turin via the city's excellent bus and tram network. It's a short bus ride to the Olympic Stadium and the National Car Museum in Lingotto, and a 45-minute journey to Porta Nuova train station for services to the rest of Italy. Turin's historic city centre is less than an hour by bus.
