Pocket Guide: Mahe Island

The largest island in the Seychelles, and the most populous, is home to Victoria, one of the smallest capital cities in the world. The Seychellois trademark white-sand, palm-fringed beaches surrounded by sparkling emerald waters can be found in the south and west, and they are well-served by luxury resorts offering diving, watersports, yachting, boat cruises and some very fine dining indeed. Inland the forested granite peaks afford spectacular viewpoints and refreshingly tranquil hiking opportunities. The capital itself houses some atmospheric Creole architecture, delightfully manicured botanic gardens and the island’s best shops, museums, galleries, eateries and hotels.

The Best Mahe Hotel Locations

Victoria – Sample the finest Creole staples, such as grilled fish and chicken curry in atmospheric restaurants set in old colonial houses, see the days catch arrive and browse for souvenirs at the lively, covered market and learn about the cultural and natural history of the Seychelles in the capital’s museums. All this can be explored from your Mahe hotel in Victoria.

Beau Vallon – Book a beach hotel in Mahe for fine, white sands, shaded by palm and takamaka trees, served by excellent facilities onshore and beautiful coral reefs offshore.

The Morne Seychellois National Park – Find a hotel close to this beautiful national park and explore a wide variety of habitats on fascinating walks that encompass coastal mangrove forests and the country’s highest peak, the Morne Seychellois.

South Mahe – The beaches may be the star attraction here, with the best strips to be found at Anse Bougainville and Anse Takamaka, but there is also the lush spice garden at Le Jardin du Roi, where you can help yourself to exotic fruits as you wander the abundant orchards. Get yourself a beach hotel in South Mahe.

How to Make the Most of Your Hotel in Mahe

The Seychellois beaches are most people’s idea of a tropical paradise and it is the stunning views of, and from, these that takes centre stage. Take a boat trip around the island to find your perfect spot or head out into the Indian Ocean to admire the remote and more secluded nearby delights of the Ste Anne Marine National Park. Ascend the forested mountains of the interior for panoramic views, admire the spices and fruits growing in wild abandon or take in the cultural and natural history museums in the capital. For even more spectacular views put your regulator or snorkel in your mouth and submerge yourself under the waters to see the colourful corals and vibrant marine life.

The diving and snorkelling here is hard to beat anywhere in the world, take a boat to reach the best spots or just see what there is from your nearest beach. You can have a go at windsurfing or sailing, but if that sounds too much like hard work you could just book a romantic cruise and sip champagne as the sun sets slowly. If you want to boast in the relaxing bars and restaurants on the island why not try a spot of deep sea fishing and reel in a giant barracuda, sailfish or marlin? If all else fails you can regale friends with tales of the one that got away!
