Pocket Guide: Maastricht

Maastricht is split in two by the Maas River, which is lined by gorgeous promenades and natural parks on either side. Every year around three million tourists visit Maastricht, for its fantastic restaurants and nightlife.

Vrijthof

This gorgeous square is the lively heart of the city, with cafés, historic buildings, such as the St. Servaasbasiliek. The city also puts on André Rieus concerts on every year in the summer.

De Markt

Markt is a historic square home to the city’s administration. Here you’ll find the centuries-old city hall and the modern city office. Just down the road there is an opportunity to shop at one of the best shopping centres in Europe, The Entre Deux. Besides the wonderful architecture of the shopping centre, the Bookstore located inside a church is a must-see.

Maas

The Maas is lovely to linger around. Take a look at the Sint-Servaasbrug, the oldest bridge in the Netherlands, and relax during a walk along the promenade.

Stadspark

Outside the city centre lies the Stadspark, an area of breath-taking natural beauty. You can find big parts of the old city walls here too, along with the most popular city pond and a huge statue of a sitting bear.

Across from the Stadspark and on the other side of the Maas you’ll find the Bonnefantenmuseum. Pay it a visit and admire classic, as well as modern pieces of art.

A few kilometers south you will find the St. Petersburg, one of the most well-known hills in the Netherlands. Take a walk through the cool, underground caves; climb the fortress that lies above the caves; and discover the butterfly paradise.
