Valkenburg is close to Maastricht and is one of the southernmost villages of Limburg. The centre of this medieval fortified town is home to battlements that were used to defend the town, like impressive castles, the city gates and a part of the city wall. On top of that, it has a 250 kilometre long cave system to explore.
Valkenburg is mostly known for its several marl caves, like the Fluweelengrot. Here you will find entrancing wall paintings, odd sculptures and a romantic chapel from the 18th Century. Also the Roman catacombs, built by world famous architect Pierre Cuypers, and the Coal Mine are worth visiting. You can choose to discover the caves by foot or to join an exciting survival excursion.
Besides the caves, you will find many castles in the south of Limburg. According to locals, this region has the most castle of anywhere in the Netherlands. Other sights and attractions include Wilhelminatoren, the cable car and the train station of Valkenburg - the oldest functioning train station in the Netherlands.
Just want to relax? Visit the only spa resort in the Netherlands, on top of the Cauberg. You can enter for free and you will get a spectacular view.
Valkenburg’s nickname is ‘Kerststad’, which translates to Christmas city. During the Christmas period this town has a magical atmosphere, thanks to the lights, many Christmas trees and underground Christmas markets.
