"Unexpected comfort in an out of the way place"
We did not expect such a comfortable and modern room in St Margarets hope on the Orkney Islands. There was adequate parking and the dinner was very good. The breakfast was only OK and we were the only ones there. We met some interesting locals in the Pub down strais

"One night stay"
This guest house was about 20/25 mins walk from main town so quite good location wise. The owner greeted me by name & was very nice. When I advised I would be leaving too early to have the included breakfast she kindly offered to leave some milk in the little fridge in the breakfast room so I could help myself to cereal etc. The room looked lovely and was very nicely decorated, bathroom was gorgeous, the facilities in the room were great as had everything you could need. The only criticisms I have are the single beds reminded me of kids bunk beds, could have been a bit bigger & more comfy & the towels also were too small in my opinion but overall, it was quite good for a 1 night stop-off on my travels.

"Great room, not a great deal else."
The rooms are disproportionately good given the rest of the hotel, very clean with huge bathrooms and very comfortable beds, and to a certain extent this justifies the price, which was pretty high even out of season. Other facilities and services aren't great- breakfast finishes at 9am everyday except Sunday, which seems a little early for a hotel that presumably caters mainly for holiday makers rather than business travellers. Also check-in finishes at 9pm unless you call ahead, which again seems early especially when the second of the two daily ferries from Scrabster (at least in March) gets into Stromness at 8.30pm. We did not eat in the bar or restaurant so cannot comment on the food. It is very conveniently located for exploring the islands and pottering about Kirkwall, although there is no parking- you need use the pay-and-display car park next door, which in theory you can only leave your car in for three hours at a time, or try to find a space in the free car park a few minutes' walk away.

"Nice but old"
The Stromness Hotel was friendly and clean but is badly in need of refurbishment. Thread bare carpet and just an overall worn look. Horrible orange paint in bathroom. The service was good, but the breakfast was changed without notice from a menu to buffet and rooms were changed on the resturants without notice. The car park was had to get to driving through one track streets and barely enough room to get in the car park. Laundry was done on time and most of staff was friendly.

Pocket Guide: Orkney Islands Italian Chapel Hotels

Discover the wonders of the Orkney Islands by stepping off the beaten track and visiting some of the smaller isles, which have just as much to offer their visitors as the mainland does.

Rent a Car and Drive to Lambholm

Take a scenic drive on the Churchill Barriers that connect mainland Orkney with a series of smaller islands to its south eastern flank. Explore the beautiful Italian Chapel on the small island of Lambholm, a tiny Catholic chapel built in the Second World War by Italian prisoners of war. This delightful chapel is white washed on the outside, only to reveal vivid frescoes that adorn the inside walls and bring a little bit of Mediterranean sun to the North Sea.

    Find Your Perfect Holiday Hotel

There are lots of places to stay on the mainland within easy reach of Lambholm. Find a hotel in Kirkwall, and stroll around the Old Town, visit St. Magnus Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace. You can find places to stay on South Ronaldsay too, in St. Margaret’s Hope and see the lochs and heathland, or seek out the wildlife on South Ronaldsay’s coast, where seals lounge on the white sandy beaches and dolphins swim in the blue seas.

Rent a car, or look for accommodation using Expedia’s handy search tool, and make your way around this wonderful archipelago.
