Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum isn’t just one of the largest museums in Spain. It is also one of the world’s most celebrated avant-garde buildings. Designed by celebrity architect Frank Gehry, its opening in 1997 brought a new generation of cultural tourists flocking to the city.
The Guggenheim Bilbao is open 10am to 8pm Tuesday to Sunday, but is closed all day on Mondays. There are free guided tours in English, Spanish and Basque, and committed art fans can book a paid exclusive tour with a gallery expert.
The Guggenheim Bilbao specialises in contemporary painting, sculpture and installations. As you’d expect, there’s a wide range of Spanish and Basque art as well as some big international names. The building is a work of art in its own right, with an intricate, curved exterior clad in glass, titanium and limestone.
Hotels near the Guggenheim Museum make a great base. As well as being close to the gallery, you’ll be near the river and the pretty Parque Republica de Abando. Even better, you can choose from some of Bilbao’s best hotels. The area around the Guggenheim Bilbao has an excellent range of accommodation, from cheap hotels, hostels and B&Bs to luxurious high-end properties and business hotels.
Once you’ve finished snapping photos of the Guggenheim Bilbao exterior, take a stroll around the building and admire the art in its grounds. Look for Jeff Koons’ ‘Puppy’, a vast West Highland terrier created from floral bedding plants. Less cute, but no less enormous, is Louise Bourgeouis’s ‘Maman’ a soaring 30-foot-high spider. Once you’ve finished admiring the art, take a walk along the Nervión River through the parks and along the boardwalks of the Abandoibarra neighbourhood.
If you want a reliable brand-name hotel, a cheap and cheerful B&B, or if you’re looking for a business hotel with all the amenities, you’re sure to find something to suit near the Guggenheim Museum.
