Siltcoos Lake: The largest lake on the central Oregon coast is also one of the region’s best fishing lakes, especially for warm water fish including largemouth bass. It also is one of the few lakes in Oregon where you can keep a wild coho salmon in season. Siltcoos Lake is a sprawling 3,164 acres located between Florence and Reedsport in the wonderful dune country of the central coastline. Siltcoos is one of the most celebrated largemouth bass fisheries in Oregon and is among those mentioned in our article, Best Largemouth Bass Fishing in Western Oregon. You’ll find tons of good bass cover all over the lake here, including fallen trees, drop-offs, points, islands and numerous coves and several longer creek arms. There also are some docks, especially where there are a fair number of private homes along the banks on the west and north sides of the lake, many clustered around the communities of Dunes City and North Beach. Bass will often move up into the shallower water during the spring, when they spawn just off shore, and they can be aggressive then. They will stage a bit more off shore at other times. Crappie also like to hang out around structure and may be found in shallower water during the spring. Sunken trees and pilings are good places to start. Also, the lake is known to have good populations of less-pursued species including yellow perch, sunfish and bullhead catfish. Trout are not the primary quarry for anglers here, but the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife does stock a modest number of rainbow trout here. Look for those plantings to take place in late winter or early spring (March and April are good times to check the stocking schedule linked below). Native cutthroat trout also live in the lake and its tributary streams and may be kept as part of your daily trout limit. The coho salmon fishery here opens in October and runs through December. Fishing for these fish is usually not productive until significant rainfall draws in these large fish, which most often happens in November. There are a modest number of coho caught and kept here, but it’s a fairly unique opportunity. Boaters catch most of the adult coho, often by trolling wobbling lures in the creek channels the salmon use to return to their home streams. What’s nearby: This home is a quick drive from multiple access points to the Oregon Dunes and ocean beaches including the popular access just out South Jetty Road, and the city of Florence is five miles north. The charming Old Town section of the city is filled with lovely shops, cafes, galleries, and restaurants. You will also be minutes from numerous trailheads for hiking or mountain biking. The coastal forests flourishing in Douglas fir and Sitka spruce extend nearly to the Ocean. Some trails wind up, over, and through sand dunes, offering hikers the opportunity to experience the unique natural wonders of this area. Bring your camera! Paddle Siltcoos River between Siltcoos Lake and the Pacific Ocean. This slow-moving, three-mile river is so ideal for paddlers that it’s a designated Canoe Trail. Take a scenic drive up Hwy 101 to Heceta Head Lighthouse where free tours are offered daily. Get your adrenalin flowing on a nearby dune buggy tour or with an ATV rental, or go crabbing from the Siuslaw Bay public fishing pier at the end of South Jetty road where crabbing is excellent from late spring until the fresh water from winter rains force the crabs out to the ocean. The decorating was also fabulous. The layout was nice for a family of 4, plus grandparents who stopped in from a local RV camp for dinner and visits. The home sleeps up to 3 couples (6 people). We enjoyed picking blackberries along the long, steep driveway (definitely do not bring an RV up here!). And then seeing a deer the next morning eating from the same blackberry bushes. Sunsets over the lake were so serene. The home was close to Florence and the sand dunes. We would definitely come back. ##### Tami O. Overall we were pleased with the tidy and nicely decorated house. The kitchen had most of what we needed to make meals. The view was lovely. There were a few downsides that could easily be fixed. The heat pump struggled to heat the living room if the night time temps were below freezing. We cranked the bedroom heaters to compensate. It is a small house and that worked fine. The driveway up is very steep and the road has loose gravel washboards. It was doable but pretty steep. I called in the heat pump issue and a problem with a faucet handle to the rental company and after 2 calls they got back to me. I’d stay there again but it would be tight if you had more than 4-5 adults. ##### Rebecca A. Upon walking in thru the garage, we encountered what smelled like a kennel, that eau du fecel smell. We tried airing out the place with no luck. I resorted to scrubbing the hallway and guest bathroom floor to finally get rid of the smell. I tried not to imagine that we had walked across feces for an evening until I scrubbed the floor, which could have ruined our vacation, but we probably did. Not what we expected from this property. Love the area, lots of things to do, but cleaning up a rental the first day is not my idea of fun. ##### Elaine A. Florence is a perfect spot to see the central coast along with venturing north and south. Home was very clean and communication was easy. The only thing keeping from 5 stars is lack of storage in master bedroom. This was obvious in pictures so the listing is accurate. Just a little inconvenient to deal with. Wonderful outdoor area to relax, look over lake and catch sunset glimpses. ##### b k. The home is very clean & new with beautiful views & deck. Our pup loved the enclosed yard and deck. It's a quick drive to beaches & town. We found so many fun things to do around Florence, including sandboarding (just rented from the roadside booth for $10). Total renovation...felt like the house was brand new. Light and bright. Clean, comfortable, well stocked and a great view of the lake. Firepit was nice to sit around in the evening and seemed to be protected from the wind. The detached game room was a nice touch with futon for extra sleeping.
